Crochet Apple Vest for Fall – free pattern









A big red apple in front, a game of tic-tac-toe on the back – Two black patches are made in afghan crochet, the perfect background for cross-stitch designs. Shoulders and side are filet mesh, bottom banding is a combination of stitches.

SIZES: Directions for small size (8-10). Any changes for medium size (12-14) are in parentheses.
Note: Both sizes are made the same. Hook size and gauge determine size.
Body Bust Size: 31 1/2″-32 1/2″ (34″-36″).
Blocked Bust Size: 33″ (37″)

MATERIALS: Knitting worsted, 2 2-oz. balls each black, main color (MC) and red (R). 1 ball green (G). Afghan hook size J (K). Crochet hook size I (J). Yarn needle.

GAUGE: 4 sts = 1″ (size J afghan hook); 7 sts = 2″ (size K afghan hook).

AFGHAN STITCH: Row 1: Keeping all lps on hook, draw up a lp in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
To Work Lps Off: Yo hook and through first lp, * yo hook, pull through next 2 lps, repeat from * across until 1 lp remains. Lp that remains on hook always counts as first st of next row.
Row 2: Keeping all lps on hook, sk first vertical bar, pull up a lp under next vertical bar and each vertical bar across. Work lps off as before. Repeat row 2 for afghan stitch.

FRONT: SQUARE: With afghan hook size J (K) and MC, ch 41 loosely. Work in afghan st on 41 sts for 31 rows. Check gauge; square should measure 10 1/4″ (11 3/4″) wide. Do not end off. Using crochet hook size I (J) sl st across last row working under vertical bars.

Edging: Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc); working down side of square, dc in end st of each row; in corner work dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc; working across bottom of square, dc in first st, * sk 1 st, dc in each of next 3 sts, repeat from * to next corner; in corner work dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc; working up side of square, dc in end st of each row to top; in corner work dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc; repeat from first * to 2nd * across top, dc, ch 1, dc in last corner, ch 1, sl st to top of ch 3. End off.
Rnd 2: Join R in sp before ch 3, ch 4, dc in same sp. * sk next 2 dc, dc in in next dc, ch 1, dc in same dc (V st), repeat from * 9 times, V st in first ch-1 sp at corner, ch 2. V st in next ch-1 sp; repeat from first * to 2nd * 10 times, V st in first ch-1 sp at corner, ch 2, V st in next ch-1 sp; repeat from first * to 2nd * 10 times, V st in first ch-1 sp at corner, ch 2, V st in next ch-1 sp; repeat from first * to 2nd * 10 times, V st in ch-1 sp at corner, ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 4. End off.
Rnd 3: Join G in ch-2 sp at corner, sc in same sp, * 2 sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in sp between V sts, repeat from * around making 3 sc in each corner ch-2 sp, end 2 sc in last corner, sl st in first sc. End off.

RIGHT SIDE PANEL: (Left-handed crocheters: This will be your left side panel) Row 1: Sk first 7 sc of rnd 3, join R in next sc, ch 4, sk 1 sc, dc in next sc, (ch 1, sk 1 sc, dc in next sc) 14 times. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2: Sk first dc, dc in next dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) 12 times, ch 1, sk next dc, dc in ch-4 sp. Ch 4, turn.
Row 3: Sk first 2 dc, dc in next dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) 11 times, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in 3rd ch of ch 4. Ch 4, turn.
Row 4: Sk first dc, dc in next dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) 11 times, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in 3rd ch of ch 4. End off.

LEFT SIDE PANEL: (Left-handed crocheters: This will be your right side panel; join R at lower right corner.) Row 1: Join R in center sc at lower left corner, ch 4, sk 1 sc, dc in next sc, (ch 1, sk 1 sc, dc in next sc) 14 times. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2: Sk first 2 dc, dc in next dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) 12 times, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in 3rd ch of ch 4. Ch 4, turn.
Row 3: Sk first dc, dc in next dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) 11 times, ch 1, sk 1 dc and ch, dc in 3rd ch of ch 4. Ch 4, turn.
Row 4: Sk first dc, dc in next dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) 11 times, ch 1, dc in 3rd ch of ch 4. End off.

SHOULDER STRAP: From right side, join R in center sc at top right corner. (Left-handed crocheters, Join
R at top left corner.)
Row 1: Ch 4, sk 1 sc on top edge, dc in next sc, (ch 1, sk 1 sc, dc in next sc) 4 times. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2: Sk first dc, dc in next dc (ch 1, dc in next dc) 3 times, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in 3rd ch of ch 4. Ch 4, turn. Repeat row 2, 7 times more. End off. Turn square to wrong side. Join R in center sc at top left corner, work 2nd shoulder strap the same.
• Work another piece the same for back. Sew shoulder seams.





Shoulder Strap Edging: From right side, with G, work 2 sc in ea sp along armhole and neck edges of shoulder straps.
Side Edging: From right side. G, work 2 sc in each sp on lower, side and top edges of side panels, 5 sc in lower corner. Sew side seams.
Neck and Armhole Edging: from right side, with R, sc in each st around neck and armhole edges.

Waistband: Rnd 1: From right join R at side seam, ch 3, dc in st around lower edge, sl st in top of ch 3, Ch 3, turn.
Rnd 2: Dc in each dc around, sl st in top of ch 3. Ch 3, turn.
Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 2. End off. Do not turn.
Rnd 4: With G, sc in each dc around. Sl st in first st. End off. Do not turn.
Rnd 5: Join R in first sc, ch 4, dc in same sc, * sk 2 sc, V st in next sc, repeat from * around, end V st, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 4. End off. Do not turn
Rnd 6: With G, work 2 sc in each ch-1 sp of V st, 1 sc in sp between V sts. Sl st in first sc. End off.
Rnds 7-9: Repeat rnds 1-3. Work 1 rnd sc around lower edge.

Embroidery: Following charts, embroider designs in cross-stitch.
Each square on charts is one stitch; each row on charts is one row of afghan st.
