Knits for Men – Inishmore Pullover – free pattern

Directions are for Size 40. Changes for Sizes 42, 44 and 46 are in parentheses.

Materials Needed
Knitting Worsted weight yarn, 4 oz. skeins – 5 skeins for sizes 40 and 42, 6 skeins for sizes 44 and 46
Knitting needles one pair each size 6 and 8, one set double point needles size 6

Gauge
Pattern stitches on Size 8 needles – 6 sts. to 1 inch, 6 rows to 1 inch
Reverse Stockinette Stitch on Size 8 needles – 5 sts. to 1 inch, 6 rows to 1 inch.

Pattern A – Worked on 13 sts.

Row 1 — Right side: K in back loop of first st, P 2, slip next 3 sts to double point needle and hold in front,
[K in back loop of next st, P 1] twice, K in back loop of first st on double point needle, P 1, K in back loop of next st,
P 2, K in back loop of next st.
Row 2: P 1, K 2, P 1, [K 1, P 1] 3 times, K 2, P 1.
Row 3: K in back loop of first st, P 2, K in back loop of next st, [P 1, K in back loop of next st] 3 times, P 2, K in back loop of next st.
Row 4: P 1, K 2, P 1, [K 1, P 1] 3 times, K 2, P 1.
Rows 5 through 12: Repeat Rows 3 and 4 four times.
Repeat these 12 rows for Pat A.

 

Pattern B – Worked on 18 sts.

Row 1 – Right side: P 6, K 1, P 1, K 2, P 1, K 1, P 6.
Row 2: K 6, P 1, K 1, P 2nd st on left hand needle then P first st, slip both sts from needle, K 1, P 1, K 6.
Row 3: P 5, [K 2nd st on left hand needle then P first st, slip both sts from needle] twice for 2 right twists,
[P in back loop of 2nd st on left hand needle then K first st, slip both sts from needle] twice for 2 left twist, P 5.
Row 4: K 5, [P 1, K 1] twice, [K 1, P 1] twice, K 5.
Row 5: P 4, [right twist] twice, P 2, [left twist] twice, P 4.
Row 6: K 4, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 4, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 4.
Row 7: P 3, [right twist] twice, P 4, [left twist] twice, P 3.
Row 8: K 3, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 6, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 3.
Row 9: P 2, [right twist] twice, P 2, K 2, P 2, [left twist] twice, P 2.
Row 10: K 2, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 3, P 2, K 3, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 2.
Row 11: P 1, [right twist] twice P 3, K 2, P 3, [left twist] twice, P 1.
Row 12: [K 1, P 1] twice, K 4, P 2, K 4, [P 1, K 1] twice.
Row 13: [P 1, K 1] twice, P 4, [K 2, turn, P 2, turn] 3 times, [K tog the first st on left hand needle with same st 6 rows below] twice for a popcorn, P 4, [K 1, P 1] twice.
Row 14: [K 1, P 1] twice, K 4, P 2, K 4, [P 1, K 1] twice.
Row 15: [P 1, K 1] twice, P 4, K 2, P 4, [K 1, P 1] twice.
Row 16: [K 1, P 1] twice, K 4, P 2, K 4, [P 1, K 1] twice.
Row 17: P 1, [left twist] twice, P 8, [right twist] twice, P 1.
Row 18: K 2, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 8, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 2.
Row 19: P 2, [left twist] twice, P 6, [right twist] twice, P 2.
Row 20: As Row 8.
Row 21: P 3, [left twist] twice, P 4, [right twist] twice, P 3.
Row 22: As Row 6.
Row 23: P 4, [left twist] twice, P 2, [right twist] twice, P 4.
Row 24: As Row 4.
Row 25: P 5, [left twist] twice, [right twist] twice, P 5.
Row 26: K 6, P 1, K 1, P 2nd st on left hand needle then P first st, K 1, P 1, K 6.
Repeat Rows 3 through 26 for Pat B.





 

Pattern C – Multiple of 4 sts plus 2.

Row 1 – Right side: P 1, * K 2nd st on left hand needle then K first st, slip both sts from left hand needle, K in back of 2nd st on left hand needle then K in front loop of first st, slip both sts from left hand needle, repeat from * across, ending P 1.
Row 2: K 1, P to last st, K 1.
Row 3: P 1, * K in back of 2nd st on left hand needle then K in front loop of first st and slip both sts from left hand needle, K 2nd st on left hand needle then K first st, slip both sts from left hand needle, repeat from * across, ending P 1.
Row 4: K 1, P to last st, K 1.
Repeat these 4 rows for Pat C.

 

INISHMORE PULLOVER

Back: With Size 6 needles cast on 120 (126-132-138).
K 1 and P 1 in ribbing for 19 rows.
P 1 row.
Change to Size 8 needles.
Row 1 – Right side: P 5 (8-9-10), place marker on needle, work Row 1 of Pat A across 13 sts, place marker,
Pat B across 18 sts, place marker,
Pat A across 13 sts, place marker,
Pat C across center 22 (22-26-30) sts, place marker,
Pat A across 13 sts, place marker,
Pat B across 18 sts, place marker,
Pat A across 13 sts, place marker, P 5 (8-9-10).
Note: Slip markers every row.
Row 2: K 5 (8-9-10), work Row 2 of each pat across, ending K 5 (8-9-10).





Continue in pats to 16 inches or desired length from start.

Width across back is 20 (21-22-23) inches.

Armholes: Bind off 5 at beg of next 2 rows.
Dec 1 each side every other row 5 times.
Work on 100 (106-112-118) sts to 9 1/2 (10-10 1/2-11) inches straight above underarm.

Width across shoulders is 16 3/4 (17 3/4-18 3/4-19 3/4) inches.

Shoulders: Bind off 10 (10-12-12) at beg of next 2 rows then 10 (11-11-12) at beg of next 4 rows.
Slip rem’ing 40 (42-44-46) to a holder for neck.

Front: Work same as back until 5 1/2 (6-6 1/2-7) inches straight above underarm

Neck: Work 39 (41-43-45), slip next 22 (24-26-28) sts to a holder, join another skein of yarn, work to end
Working on both sides, bind off 2 at each neck edge 3 times.
Dec 1 at neck edges every other row 3 times
Work on 30 (32-34-36) sts of each side until armholes match back armholes.

Shoulders: Bind off 10 (10-12-12) sts at armhole edges once then 10 (11-11-12) sts at same edges twice.





Sleeves: With Size 6 needles cast on 58 (60-62-64).
K 1 and P 1 in ribbing for 19 rows.
Next row K 7 (8-9-10), P 44, K 7 (8-9-10).
Change to Size 8 needles.
Row 1 – Right side: P 7 (8-9-10), place marker, work Row 1 of Pat A across 13 sts, place marker, Pat B across 18 sts, place marker, Pat A across 13 sts, place marker, P 7 (8-9-10).
Row 2: K 7 (8-9-10), work Row 2 of each pat across row, ending K 7 (8-9-10).
Working added sts in reverse St St and center 44 sts in pats, inc 1 each side of next row then every 6th row 14 (15-16-16) times more.
Work on the 88 (92-96-98) sts to 20 inches or desired length from start.
Width across sleeve is 16 (16^-17-17 1/4) inches.

Sleeve Cap: Bind off 5 at beg of next 2 rows.
Dec 1 each side every other row to 64 sts.
Bind off 4 at beg of next 6 rows.
Bind off rem’ing 40 sts.

Seam shoulders. Sew sleeves in place then sew underarm and sleeve seams.

Neckband: Dividing sts evenly on 3 double point needles on right side starting at shoulder seam, pick up and K 100 (104-108-112) sts around neck including sts on holders. K 1 and P 1 around in ribbing for 2 1/2 inches.
Bind off loosely in ribbing.
Fold neckband in half to wrong side and sew in place.
