Vintage knit – Child’s Twin Sweater Set

 For the little shaver! A twin sweater set built for hard play hours.
Knit of BERNAT’S Yorkshire.
CHILD’S TWIN SWEATER SET Style No. 5171
BERNAT’S Yorkshire, 8 balls
Knitting Needles: One pair No.4 needles (Standard);
one pair No. 2 needles (Standard),.
one No.4 double-point needle (Standard)
GAUGE: 7 1/2 stitches= 1 inch, 9 rows= 1 inch

SLIP-ON
BACK: Cast on 76 sts. on No.4 needles. K 1, P 1, ribbing for 2 ins. Then in stockinette st., work even for 6 ins. more. Bind off 4 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows and work even for 5 ins. Bind off 6 sts. at beg. of every row until 20 sts. remain. Bind off loosely.





FRONT:
Pattern Stitch:
Cable stitch. Row 1: K 6 sts.
Row 2: P 6 sts.
On every 7th row, cable as follows: Slip 3 sts. onto double-point needle, K 3, and K 3 off double-point needle.





With No.4 needles, cast on 76 sts. Work same as back for 6 ins. Then work cable on center 6 sts. Work even for 2 ins. more. Then K 7, cable, K 22, cable, K 22, cable, K 7. Bind off 4 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows. Work even for 2 ins. more. Then K 3, cable, K 8, cable, K 8, cable, K 8, cable, K 8, cable, K 3. When armhole measures 3 ins., work 24 sts., bind off 20 sts. (very loosely) and work one side. When arm-hole measures 6 ins., bind off 6 sts. each time at armhole side until all sts. have been bound off. Work other side to correspond.

SLEEVES: With No.2 needles, cast on 40 sts. K 1, P 1 ribbing for 2 1/2 ins. Change to No.4 needles and work in stockinette st., increasing 1 st. each side every in. until entire sleeve measures 10 ins. from beg. (54 sts.). Bind off 4 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then 2 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, . then dec. 1 st. each end of needle until 32 sts. remain. Work, even until entire sleeve-top measures 3 1/2 ins. Bind off. Make 2nd sleeve in same manner.





FINISHING: Sew right shoulders tog. With No.4 needles pick up sts. around entire neck and K 1, P 1, ribbing for 3/4 in. Bind off very loosely. With right side of front toward you, pick up 26 sts. across right shoulder and work button-holes as follows: Garter st. for 3 rows. Then, with right side toward you, K 5, K 2 tog., y.o., K 6, K 2 tog., y.o., K 6, K.2 tog., y.o., ending K 3. K 2 more rows and bind off. Work same as back left shoulder, omitting buttonholes. Sew under-arm and sleeve seams. Join sleeves to armhole.
Note. – When picking up sts. on shoulders, the 26 sts. include those on the side of the neck ribbing. (These are also to be picked up.)

CARDIGAN
BACK: With No.4 needles, cast on 80 sts. K 1, P 1, ribbing for 2 ins. Change to stockinette st. and work for 6 1/2 ins. more. Bind off 4 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, and work even until entire armhole measures 5 1/2 ins. Bind off 5 sts. at beg. of every row until 22 sts. remain.

FRONT: Cast on 44 sts. and K 1, P 1, ribbing for 2 ins.
Continue ribbing for first 8 sts. Work remainder of sweater in stockinette st. Underarm side is worked even all the way up to underarm. For buttonholes: After first 1 1/2 ins., K 1, P 1, for 3 sts., bind off 2, K 1, P 1, for 3 sts. On return row, cast on 2 sts. over those bound off, and repeat buttonhole every 2 ins.

Armhole: Bind off 5 sts. and work even for 5 1/2 ins. At the same time, when armhole is made, dec. 1 st. every 4th row (every other K row) on innerside of center ribbing until 25 sts. remain. Work even until armhole measures 5 1/2 ins., and bind off 5 sts. each time at armhole side until 8 ribbed sts. remain. Work even on these sts. for 1 1/2 ins., and bind off. Work other front the same, being careful to shape correctly and omitting buttonholes.

SLEEVES: Cast on 40 sts. and K 1, P 1, ribbing for 2 1/2 ins. (on No.2 needles). Change to No.4 needles and work in stockinette st. Inc. 6 sts. across row. Then Inc. 1 st. each side every in. until entire sleeve measures 10 1/2 ins. Bind off 4-sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then 2 sts. beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. 1 st. each side every other row until 46 sts. remain. Work even until entire sleeve-top measures 4 ins.

ASSEMBLING: Sew shoulder, underarm and sleeve seams.
Join sleeves to armholes.

Note. – These instructions have been written for a right buttonhole front. The model is a left button, that is for a boy.
