Crochet Granny Squares – Geometric Afghan and Coordinated Rug

GEOMETRIC AFGHAN

SIZE: Approximately 48″ x 70″.





MATERIALS:
American Thread “Aunt Lydia’s” Heavy Rug Yarn, 70-yd. skeins, 10 Black and 15 White.
Aluminum crochet hook size H.





MOTIFS: Make 70.
With white, ch 2, work 8 sc in first st of ch. Do not join rnds; place a marker at beg of each rnd.
Rnd 2: Working in back lp of sts throughout, * 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * around.
Rnds 3 through 8: Work 1 sc in each sc, working 3 sc in each corner; end Rnd 8 with 1 sc in each sc to corner, cut yarn.
Attach black in 3rd sc before any corner st, sc in same sp; * yo, insert hook in center st 4 rows below, pull lp up to level of row being worked, work off 2 lps; (yo, insert hook in same sp, pull up lp to level of row being worked, work off 2 lps) twice, then work off all Ips at one time for cluster st; sk 1 sc, sc in next sc, 3 sc in corner sc, sc in next sc, work cluster st in same center st 4 rows below, sk 1 sc, 1 sc in each of next 11 sc, repeat from * around; join, cut yarn.

FINISHING: Block motifs. Sew tog through back lp of sts matching corner sts, 7 motifs wide, 10 motifs deep.
Edging: With black, work 2 rnds sc around afghan, working through both Ips of sts and 3 sc in each corner st.





COORDINATED RUG

SIZE: Approximately 27″ x 40″.
MATERIALS: American Thread “Aunt Lydia’s” Heavy Rug Yarn, 70-yd. skeins, 12 Black and 8 White.
Aluminum crochet hook size K.

MOTIFS: Make 12. Work as for afghan motif using two strands held tog throughout and reversing the colors.

FINISHING: Block motifs. Sew tog as for afghan to form rectangle 3 motifs wide and 4 motifs deep. Work edging as for afghan, using two strands white.
