Crochet Granny Square – Woman’s Medallion Vest

SIZES: Misses’ small-medium (medium-large). Garment width around underarms, 35″ (40″).





MATERIALS: Reynolds Danskyarn, 5 (6) 50-gram balls color A and 4 (5) balls color B.
Crochet hook size F to make small-medium size, size G to make medium-large size, or size required to crochet to gauge.

GAUGE: 4 (3 1/2) dc= 1″; 8 rows = 3″. Large motif = 4″ (4 1/2″) diameter; small motif =1 3/4″ (2″) diameter.

PATTERN NOTES:
To Dec 1 hdc: At beg of row, pull up a lp in each of first 2 hdc, yo and through all 3 Ips on hook;
at end of row, pull up a lp in each of last 2 hdc, with next color yo and through all 3 Ips on hook, ch 2, turn.
To Change Colors: Complete last hdc in row with new color.

STRIPED TOP: With size F (G) hook and A, ch 142 loosely.
Row 1 (right side): With A, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across end last hdc with B—140 hdc. Cut A. With B, ch 2, turn.
Row 2: Working over yarn ends to conceal, with B work hdc in each hdc, end last hdc with A. With A, ch 2, turn.
Continue working in hdc alternating colors each row, until 7 rows have been worked, dec 1 st each edge on Row 5 and Row 7—136 hdc.





Shape Left Front Armhole and Neck:
With B, hdc in each of first 28 hdc, end last hdc with A. Ch 2, turn.
Keeping to stripe pat, and working on these sts only, dec 1 hdc each edge on next row, then every other row 3 times—20 hdc.
Dec 1 hdc at neck edge every other row 5 times—15 hdc.
Work 4 rows even.
Fasten off.

Shape Back Armholes: Sk next 11 hdc at base of left front armhole, with B ch 1 and work hdc in each of next 58 hdc, end last hdc with A. Ch 2, turn.
Dec 1 hdc each edge on next row, then every other row 3 times—50 hdc.
Work 14 rows even. Fasten off.





Shape Right Front Armhole and Neck:
Sk next 11 hdc at base of back armhole, with B ch 1 and work hdc in each of last 28 hdc. Complete to correspond to left front.

LARGE MOTIFS (B center): Make 18.
Beg at center, with B ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: With B, ch 1, work 12 hdc in ring; drop B to wrong side.
Rnd 2: With A, sl st in first hdc, ch 1, hdc in same st as sl st, * 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around— 18 hdc. Drop A.
Rnd 3: With B, sl st in first hdc, ch 1, hdc in same st, * 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around—27 hdc. Drop B.
Rnd 4: With A, sl st in first hdc, ch 1, hdc in same st, * 2 hdc in each of next 2 hdc, hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around to last 2 hdc, end 2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in last hdc—44 hdc. Drop A.
Rnd 5: With B, sl st in first hdc, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in each hdc .around; join in first hdc. Fasten off.

LARGE MOTIFS (A center): Make 18.
Beg with A, work in the same manner, reversing colors.

SMALL MOTIFS: Make 24.
Beg with B, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: With B, ch 1, work 12 hdc in ring. Drop B.
Rnd 2: With A, sl st in first hdc, ch 1, hdc in same st, * 2 hdc in each of 2 hdc, hdc in next hdc, repeat from * around, end 2 hdc in last 2 hdc—20 hdc. Join with sl st in first hdc. Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Joining Motifs: Beg and end 4 hdc in from each front edge of striped top, with B yarn sew large motifs
alternating A and B across lower edge of top, stitching across 4 hdc of each motif and 12 hdc apart. Sew these motifs tog side by side, stitching across 4 hdc of each motif and 11 hdc away from last joined sts.
Row 2: With B yarn, sew large motifs across lower edge of last motif row, B below A and A below B, stitching across 4 hdc of each motif; sew sides tog as before.
Repeat Row 2 twice more.
Beg at lower edge of first joined motif row, sew a small motif between 4 corners of each joined motifs, stitching across 2 hdc, 3 hdc apart; join to centers of each corner also, as shown in photograph.
Seam shoulders. Right side facing, work 1 row sc around armhole edges, matching colors and working 2 sc over each row, keeping work flat (change to small hook, if necessary).
