Crochet Granny Squares – Woman’s Bolero

SIZES: One size fits all.





MATERIALS: Sport yarn, 4 oz.
Crochet hook, size H.

LARGE SQUARE MOTIF (A): Make 4.
Ch 4, join to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, * ch 2, 3 dc in ring. Repeat from * twice; ch 2; join in 3rd st of ch.
Rnd 2: Ch 5, * 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2. Repeat from * twice, 3 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in next sp, join in 3rd st of ch.
Rnd 3: SI st in sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, * ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next sp, ch 2, 3 dc in next sp. Repeat from * twice, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2; join in 3rd st of ch. Cut yarn.

LOWER FRONT AND ARMHOLE

MOTIFS (B): Make 4.
Work Rnds 1 and 2 as for Large Square Motif.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, * ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next sp, ch 2, 3 dc in next sp. Repeat from * once; ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next sp, ch 2, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc in next sp, 1 sc in each dc and in each ch (8 sc), join in 3rd st of ch.
Cut yarn.

LEFT UPPER FRONT MOTIF (C):
Make 1.
Work Rnds 1 and 2 as for Large Square Motif.
SI st to next corner sp; drop yarn. Attach a new strand in next corner sp, ch 4, 3 dc in same sp, sl st in next sp; cut yarn. Attach yarn in 4th st of ch-4, ch 10, cut yarn. Pick up dropped yarn and sl st in corner sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next sp, ch 1, 3 dc in corner sp (corner you were building on before), ch 1, 3 dc in ch-4 sp, working on ch-10 (sk 1 ch., 1 dc in each of next 3 ch, ch 1) twice, sk 1 ch, dc in last ch. Cut yarn.

RIGHT UPPER FRONT MOTIF (C):
Make 1.
Work as for Rnds 1 and 2
of Large Square Motif.
Rnd 3: Sk next 3 dc, 3 dc, 1 tr in next corner sp, ch 12 for front edge, dc in ch from hook, dc in each of next 2 ch, ch 1, sk 1 ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 ch 3 dc under tr on motif, ch 1, 3 dc in corner sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next sp, ch 1, 2 dc in corner sp. Cut yarn.

JOINING:
Left Front: Following chart for placement of motifs, attach yarn in any corner sp, sc in same st. * ch 1, 1 sc in corresponding st on adjacent motif, ch 1, 1 sc in next st of motif, repeat from * for all connecting seams of motifs.
Shape Shoulders: Attach yarn in corner sp of upper motif, * ch 3, 1 dc in same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in next sp, ch 2, 2 dc in next sp.
Next Row: Ch 4, turn; 3 dc in next sp, ch 2, 3 dc in next sp, ch 2, 1 dc under ch 3 of previous row.
Repeat from * 3 times.

Right Front: Work to correspond to left front, reversing placement of motifs and shaping.





BACK: Ch 86.
Row 1: Dc in 5th st from hook, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, * ch 1, sk 1 ch, 1 dc in each of next 3 ch, repeat from * 18 times, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in last st.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn; 1 dc in first ch-1 sp, * ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * 18 times, ch 1, 2 dc
in last sp.
Row 3: Ch 4, turn; 3 dc in first ch-1 sp, * ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * 18 times, ch 1, dc in
turning ch.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 four times.

Shape Armholes: SI st across one 3-dc group at beg of row and leave one 3-dc group unworked at end on next 4 rows. Continue in pat until armhole is same depth as on front. End off.





FINISHING: Sew shoulder and side seams.

Edgings: Work 1 rnd sc around armhole.
Rnd 2: * Sc, ch 3, 3 dc in next sc, sk 2 sc, repeat from * around; join. End off. Work same edging around other armhole and outer edge of bolero.

Ties: Make 2. Make a 15″ chain. Work 1 sl st in each st. End off. Attach ties to fronts as shown in the photograph.
