Crochet Granny Squares – Woman’s Millefleurs Skirt

SIZE: Misses’ small (medium-large).
Garment width around hip, about 38 1/2″ (41 1/4″-44″); waist measurement before insertion of elastic or ribbon, about 35″ (37 1/2″-40″). Length as shown, 40″ (omit lower rings for shorter skirt).

MATERIALS: Fingering Yarn (3-ply): 6 ozs. black (MC), 1 oz. each of light blue, medium blue, royal blue, mint,
emerald, shocking pink, yellow.
Crochet hooks size E, D, and C, or sizes required to crochet to gauge.
2 yds 30″ wide silk lining.
1 yd narrow elastic.
2 1/2 yds 1 1/2″ wide grosgrain ribbon.
Hook and eye.

GAUGE: Large square made with size E hook=3 1/4″; medium square made with size D hook = 2 3/4″; small square made with size C hook = 2 1/2″.

NOTE: Skirt is made of 154 (165-176) squares joined into 11 rings of 14(15-16) squares each. Use size E hook for first 4 rings, size D hook for next 4 rings, size C hook for top 3 rings. Make squares in varying combinations of 3 colors on first 3 rnds, using MC for the 4th rnd only on all squares.









FIRST SQUARE: With first color and size E hook, ch 5, join with si st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: With same color ch 2, 2 tr in center of ring, ch 2 (3 tr, ch 2 in center of ring) 3 times, join with sl st to top of first ch-2. Cut first color.
Rnd 2: Attach 2nd color to corner space, ch 2, (2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in same space, (ch 1, 3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr in next corner space) 3 times, ch 1, join with sl st to top of first ch-2. Cut 2nd color.
Rnd 3: Attach 3rd color to any corner space, ch 2, (2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in same space, * ch 1, 3 tr in ch-1 space, ch 1, (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in next corner space, repeat from * twice more, ch 1, 3 tr in next ch-1 space, ch 1, join with sl st to top of first ch-2. Cut 3rd color.
Rnd 4: Attach MC to any corner space, ch 2, (2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in same space, * (ch 1, 3 tr in next ch-1 space) twice, ch 1, (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in next corner space, repeat from * twice more, end (ch 1, 3 tr in next ch-1 space) twice, ch 1, join with sl st to first ch-2. Fasten off.

SECOND SQUARE: Using other colors, work first 3 rnds as on first square.
Rnd 4: Attach MC to any corner space, ch 2, (2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in same space, (ch 1, 3 tr in next ch-1 space)
twice, ch 1, 3 tr in next corner, drop loop off hook, place first and second squares wrong side together, pull loop through corner space of first square, ch 2, 3 tr in same corner on second square, (ch 1, drop loop and pull through next ch-1 space on first square, 3 tr in next ch-1 space on second square) twice, ch 1, join to next ch-1 space on first square, 3 tr in next corner on second square, join to corner on first square, ch 2, 3 tr in same corner on second square (1 side joined), complete rnd 4 as on first square.

FIRST RING: Make 12 (13-14) squares more in same manner as second square, using as many color combinations as possible and arranging them to give a scattered effect, joining each square to preceding one and last square to first square to form a ring.

SECOND RING: Work as for first ring using different color combinations, joining each square to corresponding
square on preceding rnd. Work 9 more rings in same manner as second ring (see note for hook sizes).





WAIST: With size D hook attach double strands of MC to corner space on any square of last rnd, ch 22, 1 dc in same space, * (sk 1 tr, 1 dc in next tr, sk 1 tr, 1 dc in ch-1 space) 3 times, sk 1 tr, 1 dc in next tr, sk 1 tr, 1 dc in corner, ch 22, 1 dc in corner of next square, repeat from * around, end 1 dc, ch 22, 1 dc in same corner, ch 10, turn.
Next Row: 2 dc in first loop, * ch 3, 2 dc in next loop, repeat from * across, ch 2,turn.
Next Row: Dc in each st across. Fasten off.

BOTTOM BORDER: Note: Change colors on every rnd as shown, using MC for last rnd.
With size E hook attach yarn to corner of any square, 3 tr in same space, * (ch 1, 3 tr in next ch-1 space) 3 times, ch 1,3 tr in next corner, ch 1, 3 tr in corner on next square, repeat from * around, end 3 tr in corner, ch 1, join with sl st to first tr. Fasten off.
Rnd 2: Attach another color yarn to any ch-1 space, ch 2, 2 tr in same space, * ch 1, 3 tr in next ch-1 space, repeat from * around, end ch 1, join with sl st to top of first ch-2. Fasten off. Repeat rnd 2 until 40″ from waist, or desired length.

FINISHING: Cut 2 pieces of lining to fit shape of back and front, allowing for seams, a 2 1/2″ hem at bottom and a little fullness. Sew seams, leaving a 2 1/2 ” opening at top left seam. Hem around opening. Ease top edge of lining to top of last rnd of squares. Sew in place. Cut elastic to fit waist and sew to top of lining. Sew on hook and eye. Turn up hem. Draw ribbon through loops at waist as shown.
