Knit Classic Cardigan for Girl or Boy

Materials: SCOTCH FINGERING YARN, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins): 8 skeins for Sizes 4 and 6; 10 skeins for Size 8 … Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2 3/4 mm. size) and 1 pair No. 4 (3 1/2 mm. size) … 5 buttons for each size.





GAUGE: 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

BACK . . . Starting at lower edge with No. 2 needles, cast on
76 sts 80 sts 88 sts
Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for
2″ 2 1/4″ 2 1/2″
Change to No. 4 needles and work as follows:
1st and 2nd rows: P 1, k 1 alternately across.
3rd and 4th rows: K 1, p 1 alternately across.
The last 4 rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures in all
10″ 11″ 12″





To Shape Armholes: Keeping continuity of pattern, bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.
Dec 1 st at end of each row until there remain

Work without decreasing until piece measures from 1st row of armhole shaping
5″ 5 1/2″ 6″





Bind off for shoulder
18 sts 20 sts 21 sts
place a marker; bind off for back of neck next
20 sts 24 sts 26 sts
place a marker; bind off for other shoulder the remaining
18 sts 20 sts 21 sts

LEFT FRONT . . . Starting at lower edge cast on
36 sts 40 sts 44 sts
and work as for Back until piece measures in all, ending at side edge
10″ 11″ 12″

To Shape Armhole: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next row.
Dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row
3 times 3 times once
—at the same time— decreasing 1 st at neck edge every
3rd row 3rd row 2nd row
until there remain
18 sts 20 sts 21 sts
Work without decreasing until piece measures in all
5″ 5 1/2″ 6″
Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT . . . Work exactly as for Left Front (this stitch is reversible).

SLEEVES . . . With right side facing and No. 4 needles, pick up and knit around armhole edge

Work in pattern until piece measures from picked-up sts
1″ 1 1/2″ 1 1/2″
Dec 1 st at both ends of next row and every
8th row 7th row 6th row
thereafter until there remain
36 sts 40 sts 40 sts
Work without decreasing until piece measures from picked-up sts
12 1/2″ 12 3/4″ 13″
Change to No. 2 needles, and work in ribbing of kl, p1 for
2″ 2 1/4″ 2 1/2″
Bind off loosely in ribbing.
Block pieces to measurements. Sew shoulder seams. Sew underarm and sleeve seams in one continuous seam.

BUTTON BAND .. . With No. 2 needles, cast on 10 sts.
Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1 inch.
Next row: K 1, p 1, k 1, bind off the next 4 sts, k 1, p 1.
Following row: K 1, p 1, k 1, cast on 4 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1 (buttonhole made).
Always measuring from 1st row of last buttonhole, make buttonholes every
2 1/4″ 2 3/4″ 2 3/4″
until 5 buttonholes in all are made.
Continue in ribbing until ribbing is long enough to go across front edge, around neck and down other front edge. Bind off.
Sew Button Band around edges of front and neck, having buttonholes on left front for boy’s or on right front for girl’s. Sew on buttons.

POCKET (Make 2) … With No. 4 needles cast on 20 sts. Work in pattern until piece is square. Bind off.
Sew pockets in place.
