Children’s Patterns – Knitted Cable Cardigan With Either Round or V Neck, Long or Short Sleeves

Instructions are for small size. Changes for medium and large sizes are in parentheses.

Materials: Sport Weight yarn, 10 (12 – 14) ounces
buttons
knitting needles No. 5 and No. 6 or size to give gauge and 1 dpn or cable needle.





Gauge (No. 6 needles – Pat st): 7 sts = 1″; 8 rows = 1″
(No. 6 needles – St st): 5 sts = 2″; 13 rows = 2″

Finished Measurements
Chest (Buttoned): 26 1/2(30 1/2-34 1/2)”
Back at shoulders: 11 (12 1/2 – 13 1/2)”
Sleeve at Underarm: 10(11 1/2-12 1/2)”

BACK: With No. 5 needles cast on 94(108-122) sts. Rib in K 1,P 1 for 2″. Change to No. 6 needles.
Row 1 (wrong side): K 2, P 6, * K 1, P 2, with yarn at front sl 2 sts as to P, P 2, K 1, P 6; rep from *, end K 2.
Row 2: P 2, K 6, * P 1, sl next 2 sts to dpn, hold at back of work, K next st, K 2 from dpn (right twist), sl next st to dpn, hold at front of work, K next 2 sts, K st from dpn (left twist), P 1, K 6; rep from *, end P 2.
Rows 3-6: Rep Rows 1 and 2 twice.
Row 7: K 2, P 2, sl 2, P 2, * K 1, P 6, K 1, P 2, sl 2, P 2; rep from *, end K 2.
Row 8: P 2, right twist, left twist, * P 1, K 6, P 1, right twist, left twist; rep from *, end P 2.
Rows 9-12: Rep Rows 7 and 8 twice.
Rep these 12 rows for pat.
Work in Pat st to 10 1/2(12 1/2-14 1/2)” from beg or desired length to underarm.

Armholes: Bind off 5(6-7) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 2(4-7) times. Work on 80(88-94) sts until armholes measure 5(6-7)” from beg.

Shoulders: Bind off 8(9-10) sts at beg of next 4 rows, 8 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off 32(36-38) sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT (V-Neck): With No. 5 needles, cast on 49(56-63) sts. Rib in K 1, P 1 for same number of rows as on back.
Next Row (wrong side): Rib 6 sts and place on holder for front band. Change to No. 6 needles, cast on 1 st, K this st, * P 6, K 1, P 2, sl 2, P 2, K 1; rep from *, end last rep for small and large size only, K 2; end for medium size P 6, K 2.
V Neck: Keeping pat as established, work to 9(11-13)” from beg or 1 1/2″ less than back to underarms, end with a row worked from wrong side.

Neck – Row 1: Work to last 2 sts, K 2 tog. Continue in pat, dec 1 st at neck edge every 4th row 12(14-15) times more AND AT THE SAME TIME when same length as back to armhole, shape armhole as on back AND when same length as back to shoulder bind off 8(9-10) sts from armhole edge every 2nd row twice, 8 sts once.

Front Band: Sl sts from holder to No. 5 needles, cast on 1 st. Join yarn and continue rib on 7 sts until band (when slightly stretched) fits front neck edge to shoulder, place marker in work, continue band for 2 1/4 (2 1/2-2 3/4)” more for 1/2 back neck band. Sew front band to front of neck. Mark places for buttons, first marker 1/2″ from lower edge, last marker 1/2″ below first neck dec, others evenly spaced between.

Buttonholes: Worked on right front band opposite markers as follows: Beg at front edge, Rib 3 sts, yo, K 2 tog. On following row work yo as 1 st.





RIGHT FRONT (V-Neck): With No. 5 needles, cast on 49(56-63) sts. Rib as on back working buttonhole opposite marker.
Next Row (wrong side): Change to No. 6 needles. For small and large sizes only – K 2, * P 2, sl 2, P 2, K 1, P 6, K 1; rep from * to within 7 sts of end, P 1, cast on 1 st, slip 6 sts of border to holder. For Medium Size Only: K 2, P 6, * K 1, P 2, sl 2, P 2, K 1, P 6; rep from * to last 7 sts, P 1, cast on 1 st, slip 6 sts of border to holder.
Complete to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping. Sew shoulder seams. Sew back neckband tog at center back then sew to neck edge.

LEFT FRONT (Round Neck): Work same as Left Front with V neck to 10 1/2(12 1/2-14 1/2)” from beg, or same length as back to armhole, end at armhole edge.

Armhole: Bind off 5(6-7) sts at beg of next row. Dec 1 st at armhole edge every 2nd row 2(4-7) times, Work on 37(41-44) sts until armhole measures 3 1/2(4-4 1/2)”, end at front edge.

Neck: Bind off 9(11-12) sts at beg of next row, then 2 sts from neck edge every 2nd row twice. Work on 24(26-28) sts to same length as back to shoulder. Shape shoulder as on back.





Front Band: Sl sts from holder to No. 5 needles, cast on 1 st. Join yarn and continue rib on 7 sts until band (when slightly stretched) fits front to neck edge. Place sts on holder. Mark places for buttons, first marker 1/2″ from lower edge, other markers spaced to allow for last button in center of 1″ neckband. Buttonholes are worked same as on right front band with V neck.

RIGHT FRONT (Round Neck): Work to correspond to left front round neck. Sew shoulder seams.

Neckband: With No. 5 needles, from right side, K across sts of right front band, pick up 1 st in each st and row around neck, K across sts of left front band. Work in K 1, P 1 rib for 3 rows. Work buttonhole as other buttonholes, work 3 rows. Bind off in rib.

LONG SLEEVES: With No. 5 needles, cast on 41(43-47) sts. Rib as on back. Change to No. 6 needles. Work in St st (K 1 row, P 1 row), inc 1 st each side every 2″ 2(2-4) times, every 1″ 3(5-3) times. Work on
51(57-61) sts until sleeve measures 11(13 1/2-16)” from beg, or desired length to underarm.

Sleeve Cap: Bind off 5(6-7) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every 4th row 0(0-2) times, every 2nd row 8(12-11) times, every row 2(0-0) times. Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off 15 sts.

SHORT SLEEVES: With No. 5 needles, cast on 43(49-55) sts. Rib in K 1, P 1 for 1″. Change to No. 6 needles. Work in St st, inc 1 st each side every 4th row 4 times. Work on 51 (57-63) sts to 4″ from beg or desired length to underarms.

Sleeve Cap: Same as for long sleeves.

Finishing: Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves.
