Children’s Sweater Patterns – Crochet Toggle Jacket

Instructions are for small size. Changes for medium and large sizes are in parentheses.

Materials: 4 ply worsted weight yarn 16 (20 – 24)
crochet hook size F and size H or size to give gauge
Toggle buttons.

Gauge (Size H hook): 3 sts = 1″; 4 rows =1″

Finished Measurements
Chest or Bust (buttoned): 28(32-36)”
Back at Shoulders: 10(12-14)”
Sleeve at Underarm: 11(11 1/2-12)”

BACK: With H hook, ch 42(48-54) to measure approx 14(16-18)”.
Row 1 (right side): Sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch to end – 40(46-52) sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in 2nd sc from hook and in each sc, sc in tch – 40(46-52) sc. Ch 1, turn at end of every row.
Rows 3 & 4: Rep Row 2.
Row 5: Sc in 2nd sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, *sk 3 sc of Row 1, yo hook, insert hook from front to back, then to front around next (4th) sc of Row 1 (hook is behind sc), yo, draw up a Ip to height of Row 5, complete dc (Post St — PS), work PS around each of next 2 sc of Row 1, sk 3 sc of Row 4 behind PS, sc in each of next 3 sts; rep from *, end sc in last 3 sts, sc in tch.
Row 6: Sc in 2nd sc, sc in each sc and each PS, sc in tch.
Rows 7 & 8: Rep Row 2.
Row 9: PS around first sc (not around ch) of Row 5, PS around each of next 2 sc, sk 4 sc behind PS, * sc in each of next 3 sc, PS around each of next 3 sc of Row 5, sk 3 sc behind PS; rep from *, end PS around each of last 3 sc, sk 3 sc behind PS, sc in tch.
Row 10: Sc in 2nd st then in each PS and sc, sc in tch.
Rep from Row 3 for pat. Work even to approx 10(12-14)” from beg or 1/2″ less than desired length to underarm, end with Pat Row 9.





Armholes — Row 1: Sl st in sc and in 2 PS, ch 1, sk next st, sc in each st to last 2 PS, ch 1, turn (3 sts bound off each side).
Rows 2 & 3: Sk first sc, draw up a Ip in each of next 2 sc, yo and thru 3 Ips on hook (1 sc dec), sc in each st to last 2 sc, dec 1 sc. sc in tch – 30(36-42) sc.
Row 4: Sc in each of 4 sts, continue in pat, end sc in each of 3 sts, sc in tch. Ch 1, turn. Keeping continuity of pat, work even until armholes measure approx 5(6-7)”, end with Pat Row 6 or 10. Do not chain, turn.

Shoulders: SI st in each of 5(6-7) sts, sc in each st to last 5(6-7) sts, turn. Sl st in each of 4(5-6) sts, sc in each st to last 4(5-6) sts, sl st in next st. Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT: With H hook, ch 21 (24-27) to measure approx 6 1/2 (7 1/2 -8 1/2)”.
Rows 1-4: Same as Rows 1 thru 4 of back – 19(22-25) sc.
Row 5: Beg at front edge, work Pat Row 5(9-5). Keeping pat as
established, work to same number of rows as on back to beg of armhole.

Armhole: Keeping front edge even, shape as on right back armhole -14(17-20) sc. Ch 1, turn. Work even until there are 8 rows less on front than on back armhole, end at armhole edge.

Neck — Row 1: Work to last 3(4-5) sts, ch 1, turn.
Rows 2 & 3: Dec 1 st at neck edge. Work even on 9(11-13) sts, shaping shoulder as on back when armhole is same length.

LEFT FRONT: Work to correspond to right front, (be sure front pats match) reversing pat and all shaping.

SLEEVES: Ch 26(28-30) to measure approx 8 1/2(9-10)”.
Rows 1 – 4: Same as Rows 1 thru 4 on back – 24(26-28) sc.
Row 5: Sk first sc, sc in next sc, PS around first sc of Row 1, continue pat, end sc in last sc, sc in tch. Continue in pat, inc 1 st each side every 6(8-12) rows 4 times working inc sts in pat. Work even on 32(34-36) sts until sleeve measures approx 9(11-13)” from beg or 2″ less than desired length to underarm, end with Pat Row 9.









Sleeve Cap — Row 1: SI st in each of 3 sts, pat to last 3 sts, ch 1, turn. Dec 1 st each side every sc row until 8 sts rem. Work 2 rows even. Fasten off.

Cuffs: With F hook, from right side, work 1 sc in each ch at lower edge, ch 1, turn. Work 13 rows of sc. Ch 1, turn at end of every row. Fasten off. Sew underarm, shoulders and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. Turn cuff in half to right side.

Border: With F hook, beg at left front neck edge, work 1 row sc on front edge (spacing sts to keep edge flat), ch 1, sc in each ch on
lower edge, ch 1, work same number sc on right front edge as on left front, end at neck edge. Ch 1, turn. Working on right front only, work 8 rows sc. Fasten off.
From wrong side, join yarn at lower left front edge. Work 8 sc rows to correspond to right front border. Fasten off.

COLLAR: With F hook, ch 26(28-30) to measure approx 7 1/2(8-8 1/2)”.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end — 25(27-29) sc. Ch 5, turn.
Row 2: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch, sc in each sc, ch 5, turn. Rep Row 2 until there are 37(45-53) sc in row. Work even until
5 (5 1/2 – 6)” from beg. From right side work 1 row sc on short sides of collar.

Toggle Lps (Make 3): With F hook, ch 21. Work sl st in 2nd ch and each ch to end. Fasten off leaving an end for sewing. Join ch to form circle. With joining at center, form a figure 8 and sew at center.

Finishing: With center back of collar at center back of neck and ends of neck edge 1″ from front edges, sew collar to neck edge. Tack center of toggles to center of right front band for girls, left front band for boys. Sew buttons to hold toggle band in place.
