Crochet Cable Cardigan – round or V neck

Instructions are for size 6. Changes for sizes 8, 10, 12 and 14 are in parentheses.

Materials: 4 ply worsted weight yarn- 7 (7 – 8 – 8 – 9) ounces
crochet hook Size H or size to give gauge;
buttons.

Gauge: 7 dc = 2″; 3 sc and 2 dc rows = 2″

Each Front at underarm (without bands): 6 1/2 ( 7 – 7 1/2 – 8 – 8 1/2 )”
Back at shoulders: 11(11 1/2 – 12- 12 1/2 -13)”
Sleeves at underarm: 10 1/2 (11 -11 1/2 -12 -12 1/2)”

BACK: Ch 47(51-55-57-59) to measure approx 13(14-15-16-17)”.
Row 1 (right side): Dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch.to end – 46(50-54-56-58) dc. Ch 2 at beg of rows always counts as 1 dc. Ch 1 ,
turn.
Row 2: Sc in each dc, sc in top of tch, ch 2, turn.
Row 3: Sk first sc, dc in each of next 8(9-10-11-11) sc, * sk next sc and dc directly below, around next dc of last dc row below, work V st cable as follows: yo, insert hook from front to back to front around dc (hook is behind dc), yo and draw up a 1″ lp, yo and thru 2 Ips (2 Ips on hook), [yo, insert hook around same dc, yo, draw up a 1″ Ip, yo and thru 2 Ips] twice, yo and thru 4 Ips ( 1/2 V st made), dc in each of next 2 sc, 1/2 V st around next dc of last dc row below, sk 1 sc *, dc in each of next 20(22-24-24-26) sc; rep between *’s once, dc in last 9(10-1 1-12-12) sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in each st to end. Ch 2, turn.
Row 5: Sk first sc, dc in each of next 8(9-10-11-11) sc, * sk next sc and 1/2 V st of last dc row, around next dc of last dc row, work 1/2 V st, dc in each of next 2 sc, 1/2 V st around next dc of last dc row, sk 1 sc *, dc in each of next 20(22-24-24-26) sc; rep between *’s once, dc in last 9(10-11-12-12) sc. Ch 1 , turn.
Rep Rows 4 and 5 for pat.
Work even to 9(10-11-12-13)” from beg or 1″ less than desired length to underarm, end with sc row. Ch 1 , turn.





Armholes — Row 1: SI st in each of 2(2-3-3-3) sts, ch 2, sk next sc, work pat to last 2(2-3-3-3) sts. Ch 1, turn.
Dec 1 st each side of next row and every sc row 1 (2-2-2-2) times more. Work in pat on 38(40-42-44-46) sts until armholes measure 5(5 1/2-6-6 1/2-7)”, end on right side.

Shoulders: Sl st across each of 5(5-6-7-7) sts, ch 1, sc in each st to last 5(5-6-7-7) sts. Ch 1, turn.
Sl st across each of 6(6-6-6-7) sts, ch 2, work to last 6(6-6-6-7) sts, fasten off.

LEFT FRONT WITH V NECK: Ch 23 (25-27-29-31) to measure approx 6 1/2 (7-7 1/2-8-8 1/2)”.
Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch to end – 22(24-26-28-
30) dc. Ch 2 at beg of rows always counts as 1 dc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each dc, sc in top of tch. Ch 2, turn.
Row 3: Sk first sc, dc in each of next 9(10-11-12-12) sc, rep between *’s of Row 3 of back, dc in each sc to end.
Continue in pat to 8(9-10-11-12)” from beg or 1″ less than back to underarm, end with a wrong side row.

V Neck: Work pat to last 2 sts [yo, draw up a Ip in next sc, yo and thru 2 Ips] twice, yo and thru 3 Ips (1 decrease). Ch 1, turn. Continue in pat decreasing 1 st at neck edge every dc row 6(7-7-8-9) times more,
AND AT SAME TIME when same length as back to armhole, shape armhole as on back.
Work on 11(11-12-13-14) sts, shaping shoulder as on back when armholes are same length.





Round Neck: Work same as Left Front with V Neck until same length as back to armhole, shape armhole as on right side of back. Work even on 18(19-20-22-24) sts until armhole measures approx 3 1/2 (4-4 1/2-5-
5 1/2)”, end with sc row. Work pat to last 4(5-5-6-7) sts. Ch 1, turn.
Next Row: Sc in each st. Ch 2, turn.
Next Row: Work to last 2 sts, [yo, draw up a Ip in next sc, yo and thru 2 Ips] twice, yo and thru 3 Ips (1 decrease). Ch 1, turn.
Continue in pat decreasing 1 st at neck edge every dc row twice more, shaping shoulder as on back when armhole is same length.

RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front reversing all shaping.

SLEEVES: Ch 23(25-27-29-31). Work pat on 22(24-26-28-30) sts as on left front for 2(2-2-3-3)”. Keeping pat, inc 1 st each side every 1(1-1 1/2 -1 1/2 -1 1/2)” 7 times. Work on 36(38-40-42-44) sts until sleeve measures 10(11-12 1/2-14-15)” or 1″ less than desired length to underarm, end with sc row.

Sleeve Cap — Row 1: Same as Row 1 of back armhole. Dec 1 st each side every row 7(8-9-9-10) times. Dec 2 sts each side of next 2 rows. Fasten off.

Finishing: Sew underarm and shoulder seams.

Bands for Lower Edge and Fronts with V-Neck: Join yarn at lower right underarm seam.
Rnd 1: From right side work sc in each ch to front edge, 3 sc at corner, continue sc (spacing sts to keep edges flat) on right front, around back of neck and left front (having same number sc as on right front edge) to lower edge, 3 sc at corner, sc in each ch of left front and back. Join with a sl st to first sc. Ch 1, do not turn.
Rnd 2: Sc in same st with joining, continue sc working 3 sc in each corner st. Ch 1, do not turn. Join all rnds in this way. Mark places on right front for buttonholes, first marker opposite first row of right front, last marker 1/2″ below first neck dec, others spaced evenly between.
Rnd 3: Work sc in each sc, 3 sc at corners, AND to form buttonholes at
markers ch 1, sk 1 sc.
Rnd 4: Sc in each sc, 3 sc at corners, sc in each ch-1 of buttonhole.
Rnd 5: Sc in each sc, 3 sc at corners.

Bands for Lower Edge and Fronts with Round Neck: Join yarn at lower right side seam.
Rnd 1: From right side, work sc in each ch to front edge, 3 sc at corner, continue sc (spacing sts to keep edge flat) to neck edge, 3 sc at corner, continue sc around neck (holding to desired fit), 3 sc at corner, work sc on left front edge to correspond, 3 sc at corner, sc in each ch of left front and back. Join with a sl st. Ch 1, do not turn.
Rnd 2: Same as Rnd 2 of V-neck.
Mark places on right front for buttonholes. First marker opposite first dc row of right front, last marker over center st of corner for neck edge, others spaced evenly between.
Rnds 3, 4 & 5: Same as Rnds 3, 4 & 5 of V-neck Bands.
Sew sleeve seams, set in sleeves. From right side, work 4 rnds sc on lower edge of sleeves.
