Children’s Sweater Patterns – Knit Tartan Plaid Pullover

Instructions are for size 6. Changes for sizes 8, 10, 12 and 14 are in parentheses.

Materials: Sport Weight Yarn – 6 (6 -8-8-8) ounces Green (G), 2 ounces each Black (B), White (W), Red (R), Yellow(Y)
Knitting needles No. 4 and No. 6 or size to give gauge,
1 set (4) dpn No. 4,
crochet hook size E.

Gauge – (St st): 6 sts=1″; 7 rows =1″
(with sl st): 5 sts=1″; 7 rows =1″





Finished Measurements
Chest or Bust: 27(29-31-33-35)”
Back at Shoulders: 11(11 1/2 -12-13-13 1/2)”
Sleeve at Underarm: 10 1/2 (11-11 1/2-12-12 1/2)”

Pullover is worked in stripe pattern.
Following chart for colors, vertical stripes are worked over P sts in sl st when pieces are completed.

Stripe Pat: 6 rows G; 2 rows Y; 6 rows G; 4 rows B; 2 rows R; 4 rows B; 6 rows G; 2 rows Y; 6 rows G; 4 rows W. Rep these 42 rows for Stripe Pat.

BACK: With No. 4 needles and G, cast on 67(73-77-83-87) sts. Work in St st (K 1 row, P 1 row) for 5 rows. K next row on wrong side for hemline. Change to No. 6 needles and beg stripe pat.
Row 1 (right side): Follow chart for selected size, reading from right to left, work to center st, work center st, omitting center st follow chart from left to right.
Row 2: K the knit sts and P the purl sts.
Rep these 2 rows to 11(12-13-14-15)” from hemline, or desired length to underarm.

Armholes: Bind off 4(5-5-5-6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 2(3-3-4-4) times. Work on 55(57-61-65-67) sts until armholes measure 5(5 1/2 -6- 6 1/2-7)”.

Shoulders: Bind off 5(5-6-6-6) sts at beg of next 4 rows, 6(7-6-7-8) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Place 23(23-25-27-27) sts on holder.

FRONT: Work same as back until armholes measure 2 1/2 (3-3 1/2 -4-4 1/2)”.

Neck: Work 18(19-20-21-22) sts, place center 19(19-21-23-23) sts on holder, join 2nd skein of yarn, work to end. Working each side with separate yarn, dec 1 st at each neck edge every 2nd row twice. Work on 16(17-18-19-20) sts, shapings shoulders as on back when armholes are same length.

SLEEVES: With No. 4 needles and G, cast on 33(33-37-37-43) sts. Work hem and hemline as on back. Change to No. 6 needles.





Important: Sizes 6, 8 and 10 are worked in stripe pat as on back. For Sizes 12 and 14 work 4 rows G, 4 rows W, then work stripe pat as on back.

Row 1 (right side): Follow chart for selected size as on back. Keeping pat as established, inc 1 st each side every 6(6-8-8-8) rows 10(11-10-12-11) times, working inc sts into pat. Work on 53(55-57-61-63) sts to approx 11(12-13 1/2-15-16)” from beg, ending with same stripe pat row as on back to beg of armholes.

Sleeve Cap: Bind off 4(5-5-5-6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 7(9-10-12-14) times, every row 6(4-4-4-2) times. Dec 2 sts each side of next row. Bind off 15 sts.





Vertical Stripes: Hold R on wrong side at first row above hemline on back and at center P st. Insert crochet hook from right to wrong side, draw yarn thru, insert hook in next row above, draw yarn thru row and
lp on hook (sl st worked). Work sl st in each row to back of neck. Fasten off. Following chart for colors, work sl st in same way over all P sts.

Finishing: Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams, matching stripes. Turn and sew hems.

Neckband: With dpn and G, from right side, beg at right shoulder seam, pick up 1 st in each st and row around neck edge. Work in K 1, P 1 rib for 2″. With No. 6 needle bind off in rib. Turn in half to wrong side and sew loosely to neck edge.
