Crochet Granny Square Cap and Scarf

The squares used to make the bright cap and scarf pictured above are the same kind
of squares as those used in the
floral afghan, but each square has an additional row of double crochet stitches to make it larger. The cap is made with four of these 5-inch squares sewn together with one smaller 4-inch square for the crown. The scarf is made with 24 of the larger squares. You could use scrap yarn for the squares or harmonize the colors with your winter coat.

Size: Cap fits head sizes 20 to 25 inches (for sizes 16 to 20 inches use only 4-inch squares). Scarf is 12 by 62 inches.

Materials: 4-ply knitting worsted (4-ounce skein), 1 each of light blue, pink, rose, lime, green, and purple, 2 of navy.
Crochet hook size G or size needed to obtain gauge.
No. 18 tapestry needle.

Gauge: Large square is 5 by 5 inches.
Small square is 4 by 4 inches.

Large square: Follow crochet directions for floral afghan square for rnds 1 and 2.

Round 3: With desired color, join yarn in any ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp. *In next
sp between 3-dc group, work 3 dc. Repeat once. For corner, in ch-2 sp work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Repeat from * twice. Work 3 dc in next 2 sp. In beginning corner sp, work 3 dc, ch 2, join to top of first ch-3 with sl st and fasten off.

Round 4: Same as rnd 3 of floral afghan square.

When making large squares, alternate colors as desired for rnds 1, 2, and 3.
Use navy for rnd 4.

Make 28 squares: 24 for the scarf and 4 for the cap.

Small square: Follow directions for floral afghan square; use desired colors for rnds 1 and 2, navy for rnd 3.

Blocking: For cap, block squares before joining. Scarf is blocked after it is completed.

Joining cap: For 20- to 25-inch head size, join sides of large squares together in a circle (Figure A). Sew small square to one end for top of cap, easing large squares to smaller one so corners of small square are matched to seams of large square (Figure B).

For 16-to-20-inch head size, join 4 small squares together in a circle (Figure A) and sew another small square on top for the crown, matching the corners.

Border: Attach navy to any dc along edge of cap, ch 1 . Work 1 sc in each dc of squares and in each seam. Join with sl st to first sc. *Ch 1, work 1 sc in each sc around cap. Join with sl st to first sc.
Repeat from * once more and fasten off.

Joining scarf: Sew squares together, 12 squares long by 2 squares wide, alternating colors for pleasing effect.

Border: Follow directions for floral afghan border using navy for both rows.
