Knitting to Fit – A Sweater and Skirt – Part Two – the Sweater

  

The Sweater

Waistband:
With Wood Brown and No.3 circular needles, cast on 174 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in K 1, P 1 ribbing for 3 ins.
Next rnd: Change to No. 5 circular needles and inc 26 sts evenly over next rnd (inc 1 st in every 7th st to last 6 sts, K 4, inc 1 st in each of last 2 sts) for a total of 200 sts.
Put markers on needle after the 100th st and at end of rnd.

Body of sweater:
Work in st st (K every rnd) for 1 in.

Kangaroo pocket back:
On next rnd, start pocket back and work as shown in Figure E. Pocket front is worked separately
(Figure F).
Pattern—Right side:
K 6, sl 1, K 48, sl 1, K 6.
Wrong side: P all sts.





Remainder of sweater:
After pocket is joined to body of sweater, work even until work measures 13 ins from beg.

Armhole shaping:
On next rnd, bind off 12 sts for each underarm (6 sts on both sides of side markers). Work
front and back separately from now on.

Back:
Dec 1 st each side every other row 4 times (80 sts rem).
Work even until back measures 7 1/4 ins or desired length from underarm to shoulder.

Shoulder shaping:
Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 6 rows (30 sts).
Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows (8 sts).
Sl rem 42 sts onto holder for back of neck.

Front:
Work as for Back until Front measures 4 1/4 ins from underarm.

Neck shaping:
On next row, sl center 26 sts onto holder for neck. Working on one side of neck only, bind off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 3 times.
Dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 2 times.
Work even on rem 19 sts until piece measures 7 1/4 ins from underarm or desired length.
Bind off 5 sts at armhole edge 3 times.
Bind off rem 4 sts.
Work the other side of the neckline, reversing shaping.

Cuff facing:
With Camel and No. 5 circular needles, cast on 49 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts, and mark for beg of rnd. Work even for 23 rnds.
Mark next rnd for turn of hem.

Cuff:
Work in color pat, following chart (Figure G).





Body of sleeve:
Change to Wood Brown and inc 15 sts evenly on next rnd for a total of 64 sts.
Continue to work in st st, inc 1 st each side of beg marker every in until there are 84 sts on the needle.
Work even until sleeve is 16 1/2 ins from hem marker, or desired length to underarm.





Shape cap:
Bind off 6 sts each side of marker on next rnd.
Dec 1 st each side every other rnd until cap of sleeve is 4 1/2 ins or desired depth.
Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows.
Bind off rem sts.

Neckband:
Weave shoulder seams. With Wood Brown and No. 3 circular needles, pick up approximately
130 sts around neck edge. Work in K 1, P 1 ribbing for 2 ins.
Bind off loosely in ribbing.
Fold neckband in half and slip stitch bound-off sts to wrong side.

Collar:
With Camel and No. 5 circular needles, cast on 104 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts, and mark for beg of rnd. Work in st st for 32 rnds (underside of collar).
Mark next rnd for turning rnd.
Work top of collar in color pat, following chart (Figure G) for 23 rnds.
Work 7 more rnds in Camel.
Bind off.

Collar finishing:
See photographs 9 and 10.
Sew long edges of collar to inside of neckband and fold collar to outside over band.

Sweater finishing:
Turn under pocket facings and slip stitch in place. Sew pocket front to body.
Sew in sleeves. Turn under cuff facings and slip stitch in place.
