Use all the colors you can get or have on hand for this charming summer shoulder bag, or make it all in one color. Neutral ecru cotton rings each motif, is used for tiny joining motifs & for strap, drawstring closing & top edging. Use pretty round motif for other things: a shawl, table mats, an afghan… the list is endless!
SIZE: 8″ x 11″
MATERIALS: Mercerized knitting and crochet cotton, 1 ball ecru; small amounts of others colors. Steel crochet hooks Nos. 6 and 4. Tapestry needle. 1/2 yard cotton for lining. Matching sewing thread.
GAUGE: Each motif = 2-1/2″.
BAG: Motif (make 24): With first color, ch 5, sl st in first ch to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 19 dc in ring. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. End off.
Rnd 2: Join 2nd color in any dc. Ch 3, dc in same st, * ch 2, sk 1 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * around, end ch 2, sl st in top of ch 3. End off.
Rnd 3: Join 3rd color in any ch-2 sp. Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, * ch 2, 3 dc in next sp, repeat from * around, end ch 2, sl st in top of ch 3. End off.
Rnd 4: Join ecru in any ch-2 sp. Ch 3, 5 dc in same sp, 6 dc in each sp around, sl st in top of ch 3.
Rnd 5: Ch 3, 2 dc in same ch as sl st, dc in each of next 5 dc, * 3 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 5 dc, repeat from * around, sl st in top of ch 3 – 80 dc. End off.
FINISHING: Weave in all ends on wrong side. Sew 12 motifs tog for each side, sewing through back lps of 8 dc in joining motifs, leaving 12 dc free between joinings at corners of motifs. To fill in corners between motifs, join ecru in 6th free dc on any motif, ch 3, 2 dc in same dc, * 3 dc in 6th free dc of next motif, repeat from * twice, sl st in top of ch 3. Join two sides and bottom of bag in same way.
Heading: Row 1: Sk 4 dc of first motif at top of bag; join ecru in next dc, ch 3, 3 dc in same dc, dc in each dc across top of motif to 5th dc before joining, 4 dc in next dc, * 4 dc in 5th dc after joining of next motif, dc across top of motif to 5th dc before joining, 4 dc in next dc, repeat from * around top of bag, sl st in top of ch 3.
Row 2: * Sc in each of next 5 dc, ch 4 for picot, sl st in last sc, repeat from * around. SI st in first sc. End off. Steam-press bag.
Drawstring: With 4 strands of ecru and 4 hook, make ch 28″ long. Run through last round of motifs at top of bag, tie at center front of bag.
Lining: Cut 2 pieces, 9″ x 22″. Stitch pieces right sides tog, along 22″ sides, taking 1/2″ seams. Turn to right side; press. Fold piece in half (fold edge is bottom of bag); whip side edges tog. Insert lining; turn in raw edges at top, hem to bag below drawstring.
Strap: With 2 strands of ecru and No. 4 hook, made a ch 30″ long. Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch to end, 6 dc in last ch; working back on opposite side of ch, dc in each ch across, 5 dc in last st, join to top of first st. End off. Steam-press strap; sew ends inside bag.
