the Thursday Thirteen – a list of free knit and crochet toy patterns from around the web

Perhaps a Knit Cow to accompany the Horse under the tree?

Materials Needed:
4 ply knitting worsted weight yarn, 1 oz. each of brown and white, small amount pink
Set of four dp needles Size 5
Scraps of tan, brown, pink and black felt
All-purpose glue
Stitch holder
Cotton batting
Pipe cleaner
Small cow bell
Yarn needle
Sewing threads

Note: With duplicate stitch, embroider brown spots on body after completion. (the duplicate stitch is embroidered just as it sounds…. with brown yarn, embroider over the white stitches, “duplicating” them)

Body:
Beg at neck edge, with white, cast on 39 sts; divide on 3 dp needles.
Join; work in stockinette st (k each rnd) for 19 rnds.
Rnd 20:
(Inc 1 st in next st, k 12) 3 times-42 sts. K 3 rnds.
Rnd 24: (Inc 1 st in next st, k 13) 3 times-45 sts. K 24 rnds.
Rnd 49: (K 3, k 2 tog) 9 times-36 sts. K 1 rnd.
Rnd 51: (K 4, k 2 tog) 6 times-30 sts. K 1 rnd.
Rnd 53: (K 3, k 2 tog) 6 times-24 sts. K 1 rnd.
Rnd 55:
K 2 tog around-12 sts.
Cut yarn leaving 8″ end; thread yarn needle.
Draw up sts tightly; fasten securely.
With duplicate st and brown yarn, embroider random spots on body.
Stuff firmly; sew neck edge closed.

Head and Neck:
Working with 2 dp needles, with brown, cast on 3 sts.
Beg on wrong side, with p row, work back and forth in stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row), inc 1st each side every 4th row 3 times-9 sts.
Cast on 9 sts at end of next 2 rows-27 sts.
Divide sts on 3 dp needles. Mark beg of rnd. Join; k 11 rnds.

Shape Head:
K 8, sl next 11 sts on a holder. With 2 needles, work back and forth on remaining 16 sts for 10 rows. S1 sts from holder to dp needle. Divide 27 sts on 3 dp needles. Join; k 1 rnd.
Next Rnd: Inc 1st in first st, k 9, inc 1st in next st, finish rnd-29 sts.
Next Rnd: Inc 1st in first st, k 11, inc 1 st in next st, finish rnd-31 sts.
K 8 rnds.
Next Rnd:
K 2 tog, k 11, k 2 tog, finish rnd. Cut brown, join white.
Next Rnd:
K 2 tog, k 9, k 2 tog, finish rnd-27 sts.
Next Rnd: (K 2 tog, k 1) 9 times-8 sts. K 4 rnds.
Next Rnd: K 2 tog around. Run yarn through sts; fasten securely.

Back Legs:
Beg at top edge, with white, cast on 18 sts; divide evenly on 3 dp needles. Join; k 14 rnds.

Shape Knee:
K 6, sl next 12 sts on a holder.
With 2 needles, work back and forth on remaining 6 st in stockinette st for 4 rows.
Sl sts from holder to dp needle.
Divide 18 sts on 3 needles.
Join; k 2 rnds.
Next rnd:
(k 4, k 2 tog) 3 times – 15 sts. K 11 rnds.
Next Rnd: K 1, (k 2 tog) twice, repeat from twice-9 sts.
K 5 rnds.
Run yarn through sts and fasten securely.
Sew knee to leg; stuff firmly; sew across top.
Make 2nd leg same way, working top half with brown, lower half with white.
If desired, embroider brown spot on first leg.

Front Legs:
Beg at top edge, with white, cast on 15 sts; divide evenly on 3 dp needles. Join; k 25 rnds.
Next Rnd: K 1, (k 2 tog) twice, repeat from twice-9 sts. K 5 rnds.
Finish and stuff same as for back legs.
Work 2nd leg same way, working first 10 rows with brown, remainder of leg with white.

Ears (make 2):
Beg at lower edge, with brown, working with 2 dp needles, cast on 8 sts.
Work in stockinette st for 7 rows.
Dec 1st each side of next 2 rows-4 sts. Bind off.

Poll (top of head):
Working with 2 dp needles, with brown, cast on 5 sts. Work in stockinette st for 13 rows. Bind off.

Tail:
With brown cast on 6 sts; divide evenly on 3 dp needles. Join; k 4 rnds.
Next Rnd: K 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog-4 sts. K until piece measures 4″. Bind off.

Udder:
With pink, cast on 36 sts; divide evenly on 3 dp needles. Join; k 4 rnds.
Next Rnd:
(K 2 tog, k 2) 9 times-27 sts. K 1 rnd.
Next Rnd:
(K 2 tog, k 1) 9 times-18 sts. K 1 rnd.
Next Rnd: (K 2 tog, k 1) 6 times-12 sts. K 1 rnd. K 2 tog around-6 sts. Run yarn through sts; fasten securely.

Teats (make 4):
With pink and 2 dp neeedles, cast on 4 sts.
Work in stockinette st for 5 rows.
Bind off. Sew up side; stuff lightly; sew to bottom of udder.

Finishing:
Sew legs to body.
Sew gussets at side of head.
Stuff head firmly; sew to body with point between front legs.
Insert pipe cleaner in tail.
Attach white yarn tassel to tip of tail, sew other end to body.
Stuff udder lightly; sew to bottom of body between back legs.
Stuff poll; sew to top of head.
From tan felt, cut horns: cut two triangles 21/4″ high with 13/4″ base.
Fold in half lengthwise; sew to a point, stuff firmly.
Slip a 4″ length of pipe cleaner under poll and into horns; sew horns to bead.
Using ear for pattern, cut two pink felt inner ears; glue to purl side of each ear.
Fold ears slightly and sew to head.
Cut two 1/4″ black circles, two 3/4″ brown ovals, for eyes; glue to head.
Cut two small circles and a narrow 1 1/4″ long strip from pink felt; glue to head for nostrils and mouth.
Cut black felt strip, 1/2″ x 7 1/2″; hang bell on strip, put around neck, glue or sew ends tog.
From black felt, cut four hooves and hoof bottoms; glue a hoof around each leg, having seam at back.
Glue on hoof bottoms.

There’s still time to make toys for good little girls and boys – A Fine Knitted Horse

Materials:
4 ply worsted weight yarn -
>2 ozs. light gray (or desired horse color)
>a small amount of a darker color for the mane
>about 30″ of black for the reins

4 double pointed needles size 5
Scraps of red, black, pink, gold and blue felt
Cotton batting for stuffing
All-purpose glue
Stitch holder
Yarn needle

Begin with the horse body:
Beginning at lower neck edge, with light gray, cast on 39 sts; divide on 3 dp needles. Join; work in stockinette st (k each rnd) for 51 rnds.
Cut yarn, leaving 8″ end; thread yarn needle.
Draw up sts; fasten securely.
Stuff body firmly.
Draw up cast-on sts tightly; fasten securely.

Head and Neck:
Working with 2 dp needles, cast on 3 sts.
Beg on wrong side, with p row, work back and forth in stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row), inc 1st each side every 4th row 3 times-9 sts.
Cast on 9 sts at end of next 2 rows-27 sts.
Divide sts on 3 dp needles.
Mark beg of rnd. Join; k 20 rnds.

Shape Head:
K 8, sl next 11 sts on a holder.
With 2 needles, work back and forth on remaining 16 sts in stockinette st for 10 rows.
Sl sts from holder to dp needle.
Divide 27 sts on 3 dp needles. Join; k 10 rnds.
Next Rnd: (K 2 tog, k 7) 3 times-24 sts. K 4 rnds.
Next Rnd: (K 2 tog, k 6) 3 times-21 sts. K 1 rnd.
Next Rnd:
(K 2 tog, k 1) 7 times-14 sts. K 1 rnd.
Next Rnd: K 2 tog around-7 sts. Run yarn through sts, fasten securely.

Back Legs (make 2):
Beg at top edge, cast on 18 sts and divide evenly on 3 dp needles. Join; k 14 rnds.

Shape Knee:
K 6, sl next 12 sts on a holder.
With 2 needles, work back and forth on remaining 6 sts in stockinette st for 4 rows.
S1 sts from holder to dp needle.
Divide 18 sts on 3 dp needles. Join; k 2 rnds.
Next Rnd
: (K 4, k 2 tog) 3 times-15 sts. K 15 rnds.
Next Rnd:
* K 1, (k 2 tog) twice, repeat from * twice-9 sts. K 5 rnds.
Run yarn through sts and fasten securely.
Sew knee to leg.
Stuff firmly; sew across top.

Front Legs (make 2):
Beg at top edge, cast on 15 sts and divide evenly on 3 dp needles. Join; k 30 rnds.
*K 1, (K 2 tog) twice, repeat from * twice – 9 sts.
K 5 rnds
Finish and stuff same as for back legs.

Ears (make 2):
Beg at lower edge, with 2 dp needles, cast on 5 sts. Beg with a k row, work in stockinette st for 6 rows.
Next Row:
K 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog-3 sts. Work 2 rows. Bind off.

Finishing:
Sew legs to body.
Sew gussets at side of head.
Stuff head firmly; sew to body with point between front legs.

Tail:
Cut 15 strands of dark gray, 12″ long.
Tie at center; attach to body.

Mane:
Cut 24 strands of dark gray, 6″ long.
Beg at top of head, knot a strand through each st down center of head and neck.
Attach several short strands of dark gray between ears for forelock.

Saddle:
Cut rectangle of black felt, 3″ x 4 1/2″. Trim corners to round each end.
For blanket, cut red felt 3 1/4″ x 7″.
Cut 3/8″ x 5 1/2″ strip of black felt for cinch.
Put blanket on horse.
Glue cinch strip in place at underside of horse and at sides of blanket.
Glue saddle over blanket.

Bridle and Reins:
Cut 1/4″ wide strips of red felt: one 7″ long, one 6 1/2″ long, one 5 1/2″ long.
Place 5 1/2″ strip around mouth: glue (or sew) ends in place.
Glue ends of 7″ strip to sides of mouth piece; tack center to top of head over mane: tack sides to sides of head.
Glue 6 1/2″ strip across forehead and under chin, gluing to sides of bridle.
Cut small rings of gold felt.
Tie 15″ of black yarn to each ring for reins; glue rings to bridle as shown.

Features:
Using ear for pattern, cut two pink felt inner ears; glue to purl side of each ear.
Fold ears slightly; sew to head each side of forelock.
Cut two 1/4″ black circles, two -5/8″ blue ovals, for eyes-, glue in place.
From pink felt, cut narrow 13/4″ long strip for mouth, two 1/4″ pink ovals for nostrils; glue in place.
Using bottom of legs for patterns, cut four hooves and hoof bottoms from black felt; glue to legs.
