Baby’s Knitted Smock And Leggings Set

Smocking decorates the yoke of this mock-cable smock, buttoned down the back . . . and the leggings are practical-plus!

Directions are given for 6 Months Size. Changes for 1 Year and 18 Months are in parentheses.

Materials Needed:
Fingering or Baby Weight Yarn – 4 skeins each Lt. Blue and Blue Jewel for All Sizes.
Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 2 and No. 3.
Tapestry Needle for Smocking.
3 small buttons for Smock.
1/2 yard elastic, 5/8 inch wide for Leggings.

Check Your Gauge! -
Pattern Stitch—8 sts = 1 inch; 10 rows = 1 inch.
Rib Stitch (before smocking)—19 sts = 2 inches; 11 rows = 1 inch.
Leggings: Stockinette Stitch (No. 2 needles)—8 sts = 1 inch; 11 rows = 1 inch.

SMOCK

BACK
Starting at lower edge with No. 3 needles and Blue Jewel, cast on 106 (114, 122) sts loosely.
1st row—wrong side: Purl.
2nd row: Knit.
3rd row: Knit—hemline ridge.
4th row: Knit.
5th row: Purl.
Break off Blue Jewel, attach Lt. Blue and k 1 row.
Next row:
K 2, * p 1, O (yarn over), p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across—132 (142,152) sts, counting each O as one stitch.
Now work in pattern as follows:
1st row—right side: P 2, * k 3, p 2. Repeat from * across.
2nd row: K 2, * p 3, k 2. Repeat from *across.
3rd row: P 2, * sl 1, k 2, pass the slipped st over the 2 knit sts, p 2. Repeat from * across—one st is lost in each pattern but will be regained on the following row.
4th row: K 2, * p 1, O, p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across.
Repeat last 4 rows for pattern.
Work in pattern until length from hemline ridge is about 6 (6 1/2, 7) inches, ending with the 4th pattern row.

Armhole Shaping: Keeping in pattern, bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows—122 (132, 142) sts. Change to No. 2 needles.
Next row: P 2, * sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o., p 2. Repeat from * across—74 (80, 86) sts.

LEFT BACK YOKE
Next row: K 2, * p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across until there are 35 (38, 41) sts on right-hand needle.
Cast on 4 sts for button band—39 (42, 45) sts.
Place remaining 39 (42, 45) sts on a stitch holder to be worked later for Right Back Yoke.
Now work in rib pattern as follows:
1st row—right side: * K 1, p 2. Repeat from * across.
2nd row: * K 2, p 1. Repeat from * across to within last 3 sts, k 3.
3rd and 4th rows: Repeat first and 2nd rows.
5th row: K 1, p across.
6th row: Repeat 2nd row.
Repeat these 6 rows for Yoke Pattern.
Work even in pattern until length from first row of armhole shaping is 2 1/2 (3, 3 1/2) inches, ending at center back edge.

Neck Shaping:
1st row:
Work in pattern across the first 13 (14, 15) sts and place these sts on a stitch holder to be worked
later for back of neck; complete row in pattern.
Work 2 rows even on 26 (28, 30) sts.

Shoulder Shaping:
1st row:
Bind off 9 (9, 10) sts, complete row in pattern.
2nd row: Work across.
Repeat last 2 rows once more.
Bind off remaining sts. With pins, mark the position of 3 buttonholes evenly spaced on button band, having the first pin 1/2 inch above cast on sts and the last pin 1/4 inch below neck edge.

To make a buttonhole—Starting at beg of row, k 1, k 2 tog, O, complete row.
On next row, work the O as a stitch.

RIGHT BACK YOKE
Slip sts from holder onto a No. 2 needle, with wrong side facing, attach yarn at center back.
Next row: K 3—buttonhole band, * p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across.
Following row: * P 2, k 1. Repeat from * across.
Continue in rib pattern as for Left Back Yoke.
Reversing shapings and making buttonholes as directed, complete as for Left Back Yoke.

FRONT
Work same as Back until armhole shaping has been completed—122 (132, 142) sts.
Change to No. 2 needles.
Next row: P 2, * sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o., p 2. Repeat from * across—74 (80, 86) sts.

YOKE
Next row: K 2, * p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across.
Now work in rib pattern as follows:
1st row: P 2, * k 1, p 2. Repeat from * across.
2nd row: K 2, * p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across.
3rd and 4th rows: Repeat first and 2nd rows.
5th row: P across.
6th row: Repeat 2nd row.
Repeat last 6 rows for pattern.
Work in pattern until length from first row of armhole shaping is 2 1/2 (3, 3 1/2) inches, ending with a wrong-side row.

Neck Shaping:
1st row:
Work in pattern across the first 48 (52, 56) sts.
Place these sts on a stitch holder to be worked later, complete row in pattern.
Working over the last set of 26 (28, 30) sts only, complete as for Left Back.
Leaving the 22 (24, 26) center sts on stitch holder to be worked later for front neck, slip remaining sts onto a No. 2 needle and complete as for Right Back.

SLEEVES
Starting at lower edge with No. 3 needles and Blue Jewel, cast on 50 (54, 58) sts loosely.
Work first 5 rows same as Back.
Break off Blue Jewel, attach Lt. Blue and k 1 row.
Next row: K 2, * p 1, O, p 1, k 2. Repeat from * across— 62 (67, 72) sts, counting each O as a stitch. Now work in pattern same as Back until length from hemline ridge is 5 (5 1/2, 6) inches, ending with 4th pattern
row.

Top Shaping:
Keeping in pattern, bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Continue in pattern on 52 (57, 62) sts until length from first row of top shaping is 1 (1 1/2,
2) inches.
Keeping continuity of pattern, bind off 3 sts at beg of next 6 rows.
Next row: Decreasing one st at both ends, work in pattern across. Bind off.

SMOCKING
Thread a tapestry needle with Blue Jewel. Work from left to right overcasting the purl sts of 2 k ribs together.
1st row: Starting at lower edge of Yoke, pass needle from wrong side to the left of first k rib, make 2 overcast sts over this and second rib, ending with yarn on wrong side, fasten yarn on wrong side. * Bring yarn through to right side to left of next free rib and overcast this and next rib together the same way. Repeat from * across.
2nd row: Making first overcast sts over the 2nd and 3rd ribs, work as for first row.
Repeat the 2 rows over entire yoke.
Block. Sew shoulder seams.

NECKBAND
With right side facing, No. 2 needles and Lt. Blue, pick up and k the 13 (14, 15) sts from left back stitch
holder, place a marker on needle, pick up and k 10 sts along side of neck edge, place a marker on needle, pick up and k from front stitch holder 22 (24, 26) sts, place a marker on needle, pick up and k 10 sts along next side of neck edge, place a marker on needle, pick up and k the 13 (14, 15) sts from right back stitch holder—68 (72, 76) sts.
Break off Lt. Blue, attach Blue Jewel.
1st row: (P to within 2 sts before next marker, p 2 tog, slip marker, p 2 tog) 4 times; p to end of row.
2nd row: Slipping markers, k across.
3rd row: K across, decreasing one st before and after each marker.
Change to No. 3 needles.
4th row: K across, increasing one st before and after each marker.
5th row: P across, increasing one st before and after each marker. Bind off very loosely.
Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Turn neckband, lower edge of smock and sleeves to wrong side on hemline and tack in place. Sew on buttons.

LEGGINGS

RIGHT LEG
Starting at waist with No. 2 needles, cast on 82 (86, 90) sts.
Work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 20 rows.
Continue with short rows as follows:

NOTE: When turning, bring yarn to front of work, slip next st from left-hand needle onto right-hand needle, yarn to back, slip same st back on to left-hand needle, turn and proceed as given in instructions. This avoids
a hole in work.

1st row: K 12 (15, 18)—do not work over remaining sts, turn as directed.
2nd row: P 12 (15, 18).
3rd row: K across sts of previous row and next 7 sts—19 (22, 25) sts—turn as before.
4th row: P 19 (22, 25).
5th row: K across sts of previous row and next 7 sts, turn.
6th row: P across sts of previous row.
Repeat last 2 rows alternately 5 (6, 7) times more—54 (64, 74) sts.
Continue with long rows, working over all 82 (86, 90) sts and increasing one st at both ends of one row every 1 (1, 1 1/4) inches, 3 times in all.
Work even on 88 (92, 96) sts until total length of the short side is 7 1/4 (8 1/4, 8 3/4) inches, ending with a p row. Tie a marker at end of last row.

Leg Shaping:
Dec one st at both ends of next row and every other row thereafter until there remain 72 (76, 80) sts, then
dec one st at both ends of every 3rd row until there remain 44 (48, 52) sts.
Work even until length from marker is 7 (7 1/2, 8 ) inches, ending with a p row.

FOOT
1st row: K 38 (40, 42), turn.
2nd row: P 15 for Instep.
Continue in stockinette st over these 15 sts only for 16 (18, 20) rows.
Break off yarn.
Using the needle with the first 23 (25, 27) sts and with right side of work facing, pick up and k 12 (13, 15) sts along side edge of instep, k the 15 instep sts, pick up and k 12 (13, 15) sts along next side edge of instep, k remaining 6 (8, 10) sts.
Work in garter st (k each row) over these 68 (74, 82) sts for 13 rows.

To Shape Sole
1st row K 6, k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 29 (32, 36), k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 23 (26, 30)
2nd and all even rows: Knit
3rd row: K5, k2 tog, kq, k 2 tog, k 27 (30, 34) k 2 tog, k1, k2 tog, k 22 (25, 29)
5th row: K 4, k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 25 (28, 32), k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 21 (24, 28). Bind off,

LEFT LEG
Work as for Right Leg until 21 rows have been completed, ending with a k row.
Work short rows as follows:
1st row: P 12 (15, 18), turn.
2nd and all even rows: Knit.
Continue as for Right Leg having 7 more sts on each p row until there are 54 (64, 74) sts on row.
Continue with long rows and complete as for Right Leg to Foot.

FOOT
1st row: K 21 (23, 25), turn.
2nd row: P 15, turn.
Work 16 (18, 20) rows of stockinette st over these 15 sts. Break off yarn.
Using the needle with the first 6 (8, 10) sts and with right side of work facing, pick up and k 12 (13, 15) sts
along side edge of instep, k the 15 instep sts, pick up and k 12 (13, 15) sts along opposite side edge of instep, k remaining 23 (25, 27) sts.
Work in garter st for 13 rows over these 68 (74, 82) sts.

To Shape Sole:
1st row: K 23 (26, 30), k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 29 (32, 36), k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 6.
2nd and all even rows: Knit.
3rd row: K 22 (25, 29), k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 27 (30, 34), k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 5.
5th row: K 21 (24, 28), k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 25 (28, 32), k 2 tog, k 1, k 2 tog, k 4. Bind off.
Block to measurements. Sew each leg seam from foot up to marker. Then sew center back seam joining the Right Leg to Left Leg. Sew center front seam. Sew sole seam from dec under the instep to dec at the heel. Fold 9 rows at waistband to wrong side and slip-stitch in place, leaving an opening for elastic. Draw elastic through and sew ends together. Sew up opening.

DRESS

BODICE-BACK
Starting at lower edge, ch 48 (52, 56) to measure 10 1/4 (10 3/4, 11 1/4) inches.
1st row—right side: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across —47 (51, 55) sc. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in first sc, * tr in next sc, pushing tr to back of work sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
3rd row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
4th row: Sc in first 2 sc, * tr in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across to within last sc, sc in last
sc. Ch 1, turn.
5th row: Repeat 3rd row. Ch 1, turn.
The 2nd through 5th row of Bodice—Back forms the pattern.

Armhole Shaping:

Work even in pattern across this set of sts only until piece from first row of armhole shaping is 2 1/2 (2 3/4, 3) inches, ending at center front. Turn.

Neck Shaping:
1st row: Sl st in first 6 (7, 8 ) sts, work in pattern across. Ch 1, turn.
Continue in pattern, decreasing one st at neck edge every row twice.
Work even in pattern over the remaining 11 (12,13) sts until front measures same as Back to shoulder shaping, ending at armhole edge.

Shoulder Shaping:
1st row:
Sl st in first 3 (4, 5) sts, work in pattern across remaining sts. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Work across to within last 4 sts—do not work in last 4 sts. Break off and fasten.

RIGHT FRONT

2nd rnd: Sc in joining, tr in next sc, * sc in next sc, tr in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. Ch 1, turn.
3rd rnd: Repeat first rnd. Ch 4, turn.

Top Shaping:
1st row: Sl st in the first 2 sts, work in pattern across to within last 2 sts—do not work in remaining sts. Ch 1, turn.
Work in pattern decreasing one st at each end of every row until total length is 2 (2 1/4, 2 1/2) inches. Break off and fasten.
Sew shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves, gathering top edge to fit.

COLLAR
With right side facing, attach yarn to right neck edge.
1st row: Ch 1, sc where yarn was attached, sc evenly along neck edge, having a number of sc divisible by 2 plus 1. Ch 3, turn.
2nd row: DC in first sc, * dc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn.
3rd and 4th rows: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.
At end of last row omit turning chain.
Next row: Sl st in each st across. Break off and fasten.
With right side facing, attach yarn to left neck edge, ch 3, dc evenly along front opening. Break off and fasten.
Sew 2 buttons to left front opening, using corresponding sts as buttonholes.
Press lightly.

SOAKER

BACK
Starting at waist, ch 53 (55, 57) to measure 11 (11 1/2, 12) inches.
1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across—51 (53, 55) dc, counting ch-3 as 1 dc. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of ch-3. Ch 3, turn.
3rd and 4th rows: Dc in first dc, dc in each dc across, 2 dc in top of turning chain—one st increased at each end of each row—55 (57, 59) dc. Ch 3, turn.
5th and 6th rows: Repeat 2nd row.
Next 2 rows: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows—59 (61, 63) dc.
Repeat 2nd row until total length is 5 1/2 (6, 6 1/2) inches.
Mark both ends of last row to indicate end of side edge. Ch 3, turn.

Leg Shaping: Next row: Skip first dc, (yarn over, draw up a loop in next st) 3 times; yarn over and draw through 6 loops on hook, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook—2 dc decreased at beg of row; work to within last 4 sts, dec 2 dc over next 3 dc as before, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.
Repeat last row until 19 (21, 23) dc remain. Break off and fasten.

FRONT Work same as Back. Sew side and crotch seams.

LEG BAND
1st rnd: With right side facing, attach yarn at crotch seam, ch 1, sc evenly around leg opening, having a
number of sc divisible by 2. Join. Ch 1, turn.
Next 3 rnds: Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 4th rnds of Border of Skirt. Break off and fasten.

WAISTBAND
With right side facing and working along opposite side of starting chain, attach yarn to side seam, ch 4, * skip 1 ch, dc in next ch, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-4.
Break off and fasten.
Press through damp cloth. Run a 1-yard length of ribbon through the ch-1 sps. Tie in a bow at front.

BOOTEES

SOLE
Starting at center, ch 17.
1st rnd: Make 6 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 12 ch, 7 dc in last ch; working along opposite side of starting chain, dc in next 12 ch. Join with sl st to top of ch-3.
2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in joining, 2 dc in each of next 6 dc, dc in next 12 dc, 2 dc in each of next 7 dc, dc in next
12 dc. Join.
3rd rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, 2 sc in next dc, (sc in next dc, 2 sc in next dc) 6 times; sc in next 12 dc, (sc in
next dc, 2 sc in next dc) 7 times; sc in next 12 dc. Join. Break off and fasten.

UPPER
Starting at toe, ch 7.
1st row right side: Dc in 4th ch from hook, 3 dc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch—7 dc. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in each dc across, sc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.
3rd row: 2 dc in first sc, dc in each sc to within center st, 3 dc in center sc, dc in each sc to within last sc, 3 dc in last sc— 6 dc increased. Ch 1, turn.
4th through 8th row: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately— 25 sc on last row. Ch 3, turn.
9th row: Skip first sc, dc in next 11 sc, 3 dc in next sc, dc in next 12 sc—27 dc. Ch 1, turn.
10th row: Repeat 2nd row. Ch 3, turn.

LEFT SIDE
1st row: Skip first sc, dc in next 11 sc. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in each dc across, dc in top of turning chain—12 sc. Ch 3, turn.
Next 8 rows: Repeat last 2 rows alternately.
At end of last row break off and fasten.

RIGHT SIDE
Skip center 3 sts on last long row, attach yarn to next sc, ch 3 and work to correspond with Left Side.
Leaving a 1-inch opening at top, sew back seam. Pin Sole to Upper. Working through both thicknesses, sc evenly around. Join to first sc. Break off and fasten.

CUFF
1st row: With wrong side facing and working along top edge of Upper, make 33 sc evenly across. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 3, turn.
3rd row: Skip first sc, dc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
4th row: Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * across— 49 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Work in pattern as for Bodice—Back for 6 rows.
Break off and fasten.
With wrong side facing, attach yarn to top of the 1-inch back opening; working along back opening make sc and tr alternately across. Break off and fasten.
Run an 18-inch length of ribbon through 3rd row of Cuff.
Tie in a bow at back.

SOAKER

BACK — Left Leg Band . . . Starting at lower edge of leg band with White, cast on 40 (46) sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 5 rows.
Next row: P across, decreasing 10 sts evenly across. There remain 30 (36) sts.
Break off.

Right Leg Band . . . Work as for Left Leg Band until 30 (36) sts remain.
Now work in stockinette st as follows:
1st row: K 30 (36) sts from Right Leg Band, cast on 16 sts for crotch, k 3 sts from Left Leg Band. Turn.
2nd row: P 22, turn.
3rd row: K 25, turn.
4th row: P 28, turn.
5th row: K 31, turn.
6th row: P 34, turn.
Continue in this manner, working 3 sts more on every row until all sts are worked onto one needle.
Continue in stockinette st until piece measures 8 1/2 (9) inches from crotch, ending with a purl row and decreasing 1 st at end of last row.
Break off White, attach Baby Pink and work in pattern as for Sacque for 1  1/2 (1  3/4) inches. Bind off.

FRONT
Work exactly as for Back.

Sew up side and crotch seams. Press through damp cloth. Cut a 34-inch length of narrow ribbon and run
through cable stitch 1 inch from top as illustrated.

CARRIAGE COVER

Materials Needed
Fingering or Baby Weight Yarn – 9 skeins of Baby Pink and 5 skeins of White.

Use yarn double throughout.

With double yarn wind 8 bobbins of White and 7 bobbins of Baby Pink.

Check Your GAUGE: 6 1/2 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

With double strand of White, cast on 175 sts.
Work in moss st for 2 inches.
Now work in pattern as follows:
1st row: With White (k 1, p 1) 6 times; k 1, * drop White, attach Baby Pink, with Baby Pink (p 1. k 3)
4 times; p 1, drop Baby Pink, attach White, with White (k 1, p 1) twice; k 1. Repeat from * 5 more times, drop White, attach Baby Pink, with Baby Pink (p 1, k 3) 4 times; p 1, drop Baby Pink, attach White, with White (k 1, p 1) 6 times; k 1.
2nd row: With White, (k 1, p 1) 6 times; k 1, * with Baby Pink (k 1, p 3) 4 times; k 1, with White (k 1, p 1) twice; k 1. Repeat from * 5 more times, with Baby Pink (k 1, p 3) 4 times; k 1, with White (k 1, p 1) 6 times; k 1.
Now work as for Sacque in pattern as established, keeping moss st panels in White and cable panels in Pink, until piece measures 30 inches in all, ending with the 6th row.
Break off Baby Pink. With White only, work in moss st for 2 inches. Bind off.
Block to measurements. Press through damp cloth.

For Babies Who Arrive In The Spring – Knit Carriage Set – Saque, Bonnet and Mittens

Materials Needed
Sock, Fingering or Baby weight yarn – 4 skeins pink, 1 skein white
One pair knitting needles size 2
Crochet hook size D
2 1/2 yards of pink satin ribbon, 3/4 inch wide . . . 2 1/2 yards of pink satin ribbon, 3/8 inch wide.

Check your Gauge: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

Directions are given for 6 months size. Changes for 1 year size are in parentheses.

SACQUE

BACK . . . Starting at lower edge with White, cast on 75 (83) sts.
Work in moss st as follows:
1st row: * K 1, p 1. Repeat from * across to last st, k 1. This row constitutes the moss st pattern.
Work in moss st for 3 more rows.
Break off White. Attach Baby Pink. Now work in cable pattern as follows:
1st row:
* K 3, p 1. Repeat from * across to last 3 sts, k 3.
2nd row: * P 3, k 1. Repeat from * across to last 3 sts, p 3.
3rd row: * Sl 1 as if to purl, k 2, pass slipped st over the 2 knitted sts, p 1. Repeat from * across to last 3 sts, sl 1 as if to purl, k 2, pass slipped st over the 2 knitted sts.
4th row: * P 2, k 1. Repeat from * across to last 2 sts, p 2.
5th row: Inc 1 st in first st, k 1, * p 1, inc 1 st in next st, k 1. Repeat from * across.
6th row: * P 3, k 1. Repeat from * across to last 3 sts, p 3.
The last 4 rows (3rd to 6th rows incl) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 6 (6 1/2) inches in all, ending with 6th row of pattern.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.
Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 65 (73) sts.
Work in pattern without decreasing until piece measures 3 1/2 inches from first row of armhole shaping.

To Shape Shoulders: Bind off 11 (12) sts at the beginning of next 4 rows.
Bind off remaining 21 (25) sts.

Note: When changing from one color to another, always twist the unused color around the other to prevent making holes.

RIGHT FRONT . . . Starting at lower edge with White, cast on 35 (39) sts.
Work in moss st for 4 rows.
Now work in pattern as follows:
1st row: With White k 1, p 1, k 1, attach Baby Pink, with Baby Pink, * p 1, k 3. Repeat from * across.
2nd row: * P 3, k 1. Repeat from * across to last 3 sts, with White k 1, p 1, k 1.
Keeping front border in moss st and White, work in pattern as established until piece measures 6 (6 1/2 ) inches in all, ending with 5th row of pattern.

To Shape Armhole: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of next row.
Dec 1 st at same edge every other row until there remain 30 (34) sts.
Work in pattern without decreasing until piece measures 2 1/2 inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge.

To Shape Neck: Bind off 5 (7) sts at the beginning of next row.
Dec 1 st at same edge every other row until there remain 22 (24) sts.
Work without decreasing until piece measures 3 1/2 inches from first row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge.

To Shape Shoulder: Bind off 11 (12) sts at the beginning of next row.
Work one more row. Bind off remaining sts.

LEFT FRONT . .Work as for Right Front, reversing pattern, front band and shapings.

SLEEVES . . . Starting at lower edge with White, cast on 41 (45) sts.
Work in moss st for 4 rows, increasing 6 (10) sts evenly across last row.
Break off White, attach Baby Pink and work in pattern as for Back until piece measures 6 (6 1/2) inches in all.

To Shape Top: Bind, off 3 sts at the beginning of next 2 rows.
Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until 25 (41) sts remain.
Dec 1 st at both ends of every row until 17 sts remain.
Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of next 4 rows.
Bind off remaining 9 sts.

NECKBAND . . . Sew shoulder seams.
With right side of work facing and White, pick up and k 71 (75) sts around entire neck edge.
Work in moss st for 1/2 inch. Bind off.
Block to measurements. Sew up side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves. Cut two 9-inch lengths of narrow ribbon. Sew in place for ties.

_ BONNET _

Starting at front edge with White, cast on 87 sts.
Work in moss st for 1 inch. Break off White.
Attach Baby Pink and work in pattern as for Sacque until piece measures 5 inches in all, ending with right side facing and decreasing 1 st at the end of last row (86 sts).

To Shape Crown: Now work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) as follows: K 5, * k 2 tog, k 7. Repeat from * across (9 sts decreased).
2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Work without decreasing.
5th row: K 5, * k 2 tog, k 6. Repeat from * across.
Continue to work in this manner, decreasing 9 sts evenly spaced on every 4th row, always working 1 st less between decreases until 50 sts remain, ending with a purl row.
Next row: * K 3, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across.
Dec 10 sts evenly spaced every other row until 10 sts remain.
Break off, leaving a 10-inch strand. Thread this yarn through a tapestry needle and run through remaining sts. Draw up tightly and fasten securely on wrong side. Sew up seam 1/2 inch past shaping of crown. Turn back moss st border. Press lightly through a damp cloth.
Cut 2 pieces of the wide ribbon, each 14 inches long, and sew in place for ties. Make 3 rosettes with remaining wide ribbon and sew one to top of Bonnet and one to each side of front as illustrated.

MITTENS

Starting at cuff with White, cast on 42 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 2 inches.
Next row (beading): * K 1, yarn over, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across.
Following row: Work in ribbing, increasing 1 st at end of row.
Break off White, attach Baby Pink and work in pattern as for Sacque, until piece measures 2 1/2 inches from top of ribbing, decreasing 1 st at end of row and ending with right side facing.

To Shape Tip: Now work in stockinette st as follows:
1st row: K 2, * k 2 tog, k 2. Repeat from * across.
2nd row: P across.
Work 2 rows in stockinette st without decreasing.
Next row: * K 2, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across.
Following row: P across.
Work 2 rows without decreasing.
Next row: * K 1, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across.
Break off, leaving a 10-inch length of yarn. Thread this yarn through a tapestry needle and draw through remaining sts. Sew securely on wrong side.
Press lightly through a damp cloth.
Sew up seam. Cut 2 16-inch lengths of narrow ribbon and run through beading at wrists.

For Babies Who Arrive In The Spring – A Hairpin Lace Saque and Cap

Materials Needed
Fine Baby or Fingering Weight Yarn, 4 skeins white
Rayon crochet thread 1 ball green
Crochet Hook size C – 2
Steel crochet hook size 7
A hairpin lace staple, 5/8 inch wide.
5 yards of green satin ribbon, 1/2 inch wide.

Check Your Gauge: 7 sc make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS:
Chest
— 18 inches; Length from shoulder to lower edge — 11 inches.

SACQUE

BODICE — Hairpin Lace Strip
(Make 11) . . . With White yarn and plastic crochet hook, make a strip of hairpin lace, having 46 loops on
each side of staple. Break off.
Keeping all loops straight and using steel crochet hook, attach Rayon Crochet to first loop, sc in same loop, (ch 5, sc in next loop) 18 times; sc in next 8 loops, ch 2, sl st in last ch-5 made, ch 2, sc in next loop on hairpin lace, * ch 2, sl st in next ch-5 loop, ch 2, sc in next loop on hairpin lace.
Repeat from * across until all loops have been joined. Break off.

To Join Strips: Keeping all loops straight and holding 2 strips of hairpin lace together, attach yarn to first loop on one strip, sc in first loop on second strip, * sc in next loop on first strip, sc in next loop on second strip.
Repeat from * until 20 loops have been joined. Break off.
Join next strip to opposite side of second strip the same way, leaving 6 loops free on rounded end.
Join remaining strips the same way.
Attach yarn to first free loop on end strip at Bodice top, sc in same place, * ch 2, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across to within last 6 loops. Break off. Work opposite end the same way.
Attach yarn to first ch-2 sp, 2 sc in each ch-2 sp across, 4 sc in each loop on rounded end of each hairpin
lace strip, 2 sc in each sp across other side, sc closely across straight edge. Join and break off.

Yoke . . . Starting at neck with White and size C hook, ch 89-
1st row: 2 tr in 7th ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 2 tr in next ch. Repeat from * across, ending with tr in last ch. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in each tr and in each sp across, ending with sc in last tr, sc in next 2 ch. Ch 1, turn.
3rd row: Sc in first 18 sc, 2 sc in next sc—1 sc increased—(front), sc in next 17 sc, 2 sc in next sc(armhole), sc in next 30 sc, 2 sc in next sc (back), sc in next 17 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each remaining sc. Ch 1, turn.
4th to 16th rows incl: Sc in each sc across, increasing over previous increases on each row. Ch 1, turn.
At end of 16th row, join to Bodice of sacque as follows:
Sc in first sc on yoke, ch 3, sc in first sc on straight edge of Bodice.* ch 3, skip 2 sc on yoke, sc in next sc, ch 3, skip 2 sc on Bodice, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across front of yoke, ending with sc in last sc on yoke, ch 3, skip 2 sc on bottom, sc in next sc, ch 3, leaving armhole section free, sc in first sc on back of yoke and continue to work in pattern across back and other side of front. Break off.

Sleeve . . . Make a strip of hairpin lace, having 41 loops on each side of staple. Attach Rayon to first loop, sc
in same loop, (ch 5, sc in next loop) 16 times; sc in next 8 loops, ch 2, sl st in last ch-5 loop, ch 2, sc in next loop on hairpin lace. Continue to work in pattern until all loops have been joined. Break off.
Make 4 more strips the same way.
Join strips as before, leaving 3 loops free on rounded end of each strip.
Join last strip to first strip.
Attach yarn to straight edge and sc closely around. Join and break off.
Attach yarn to armhole of sacque and join sleeve as Bodice was joined to yoke.

Cuff … 1st rnd: Attach yarn to first free loop on any strip, make 3 sc in each loop around. Join.
2nd to 5th rnds incl – Sc in each sc around, decreasing 2 sc evenly on each rnd— to dec 1 sc work off 2 sc as 1 sc.
6th rnd: Sl st in each sc around. Join and break off. Make other sleeve the same way.
Attach yarn to first sc on Right Front (following scallop) and sc closely across front, neck and other side of
front. Break off.
With wrong side facing, attach yarn to first sc on neck edge, sc in same place, * ch 3, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
Next row: 5 sc in each loop across. Break off.

CAP . . . Make a strip of hairpin lace, having 29 loops on each side of staple. Break off.
Attach Rayon to first loop, sc in same loop, (ch 5, sc in next loop) 10 times; sc in next 8 loops, ch 2, sl st in last ch-5 loop made, ch 2, sc in next loop on hairpin lace.
Continue to work in pattern until all loops have been joined. Break off.
Make 5 more strips the same way. Join strips as before, leaving 6 loops free on rounded end of each strip. Attach yarn to first free loop on end strip, 2 sc in same loop and in each loop to within last 6 loops on strip, 4 sc in each loop on rounded end of each strip, ending with 4 sc in each of 6 loops on last strip, 2 sc in each remaining loop, sc closely across straight edge. Break off.

Back of Cap . . . Starting at center with White, ch 2.
1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around.
3rd rnd: * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from *around.
Inc 6 sc evenly on each rnd until piece measures 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Join and turn.
Next rnd: Sc in each sc around, increasing 6 sc evenly around. Join and turn.
Repeat last rnd 3 more times.
Join back to hairpin lace as before, leaving 2 inches free on back. Break off.
Attach yarn to lower edge at front and sc closely across neck edge. Ch 1, turn.
Next row: Sc in each sc across. Break off.

Cuff . . . 1st row: Fold scallops back 1 1/4 inches, attach yarn and, working through both thicknesses, sc
closely across. Ch 3, turn.
2nd row: DC in next sc, * ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1. turn.
3rd row: Sc in each dc and in each sp across, sc in top of turning chain. Ch 1, turn.
4th row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Sc in each sc across front and across neck. Join and
break off.
Lace a piece of ribbon through spaces on cuff. Sew ends securely. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon, each 12 inches long. Sew in place for ties. Cut remaining ribbon in half and make a rosette for each side of Cap. Sew rosettes in place.
